I am a fan of Natusch's Caged Series and was eager to give this one a try as well. This one was somewhat interesting but wasn't as captivating for several reasons. The first is that one of the things I loved about Caged was how easy it was to relate to the heroine and how she seemed like someone you'd like to know. The heroine in this story was not that way by design (it seems to be the premise of the book) but none of the supporting characters were easy to relate to either. It kind of read like a B movie. I was a bit disappointed because I've enjoyed her other series so much. I won't be reading the second book in the series.

Another series by this author that I am hooked on. I love the Caged world and I am heart broken to hear that the Caged Series is coming to an end, however, I am hopeful that this Unborn Series will fill that void. This first book did a little of that. While this book can be read as a stand alone, I would highly recommend that one reads the Caged Series first since your enjoyment would be greatly increased. This group of PC fighters do not seem as disciplined or polished as those we were introduced to in the Caged Series. I'm sure there is more of a back story to this that will become apparent as the series progresses.I love Khara. While Ruby in the Caged Series is dealing with her dark side, Khara is struggling with her Light. And then there is Sean, the only cross over character from the Caged Series so far. I hope we get to see much more of him and how he is going to have to navigate the 2 very complex women that have entered is life. While Sean is only in a very few scenes in the book, the bits we get to see of him are very illuminating as Sean is depicted from the viewpoint of his Detroit PC brethren. Then there is the dark, conflicted, sexy Oz character, who also appears to have much history with Sean as well as another PC brother, Kierson. Promises of so much more dark, sexy menace to come!I cannot wait to dive into the next book in the series, 'Unseen'.

Unborn is a mix of paranormal and mythology and is a spin off to the Caged Series also by Natusch, which I recommend. Don't let the mythology scare you away. There are big myths that are commonly known and explained well with a new take.Khara was raised in the Underworld by Hades like a loved adopted daughter and a ward to Demeter. She has learned over centuries to be logical and turn off emotions. Unexpectedly, she is taken from her home in the Underworld and drop off in snowy Detroit. Quickly she is found by the leader of the Petronus Ceteri (PC). All of the members of the PC are sons of Ares and are the police to the supernatural/mythological community that includes Gargoyles, and Breathers (unique to this story). The members of a PC and a guy named Oz set out to find out why she is here while the paranormal community starts to go crazy. The characters are one of the things I love about Natusch's books. They are written very well and have many layers to them. Unborn is no exception. Khara is logical, smart and unemotional on the outside, she still is likeable. You like Khara because she is strong but has a naivete because she has been thrown into this situation that starts to illicit emotions she never once had. The members of the PC all have unique personalities that draw you in. Oz also pulls you in even though he pushes you away. While the story is full of action, it also shows the growth of Khara, Oz and the members of the PC. The action and growth are in perfect harmony. There is mystery, love and betrayal. I couldn't put it down. This is set to be a series. I don't know how many there will be in the series. I will buy and read them all. It ends a little cliffy which I don't mind.I wrote this review not because I got an ARC but because this book is awesome!

How could I not give this five stars when I am such a fan! Ok, but seriously. I have read many reviews comparing Khara to Ruby (the Caged series) and I have to say that their similarity is that they are characters that were thought up, and produced by a genius. Amber knows how to produce a character in a setting that is unfamiliar to the reader, yet she still pulls you right in to their life as if you are sharing all their new experiences together. The main character, Khara, from the Underworld, is thrown in to Detroit meeting her brothers and experiencing all the turmoils they must deal with on the day to day. I won't give anything away, but she might seem like a rather bland character; rather she has been around for millennia and has just learned that keeping a rather stoic personality has served her well in the Underworld. The love that is shared within the story is heart warming and, at times, the love that you develop for the characters makes you want to jump off your seat and slam someone in the nose when they are in trouble. I feel that if someone read this and didn't think it was a fantastic book, they should read the Caged series. Or at least Tarnished. I feel that I have the background to go in to this setting and know what is going on. I do, however understand how someone might look in to it and feel that some things are just thrown in there. They are references people! All together this book was fantastic! I plan to read all of Amber's book from here on out since I have been hooked after reading Caged! I have also got two friends hooked on the series too and they love it! I will never stop recommending these books!
