The Provost's Handbook: The Role of the Chief Academic Officer

Review

"The Provost’s Handbook is essential reading for every aspiring, new, and veteran chief academic officer. This perfect primer for the provost of the twenty-first century is organized around two themes: the Academic Agenda and Essential Partnerships. Martin and Samels have assembled a collection of smart, concise, genuinely useful chapters about leading institutions, managing relationships, and establishing trust and confidence in one of the most complex professional environments. As a veteran provost, I learned many new lessons from this engaging, provocative volume." (Vita Rabinowitz, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Hunter College)"It has been a pleasure for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs to feature several timely books by Drs. Martin and Samels at Annual Conferences over the past decade and more. Whether the focus was on how colleges and universities deal with the new fiscal realities or building a more sustainable institution, their writing is always future-focused, thought provoking, and a pleasure to experience as a reader. The Provost’s Handbook is no exception." (Douglas Viehland, Executive Director/CEO, Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs)"The Provost’s Handbook is invaluable, particularly for incoming chief academic officers. It provides advice related to the enduring aspects of this position, such as faculty relations, and guidance on new developments like the influence of social media. It emphasizes the importance of a deep understanding of the budget―the concrete manifestation of priorities." (Elizabeth Garrett, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Southern California)"The Provost's Handbook is essential reading for all aspiring and sitting Chief Academic Officers, and for their institutional peers." (Margaret (peggy) Jablonski NASPA Leadership Exchange Magazine)"Offer[s] glimpses of the many roles a chief academic officer (CAO) plays in today's colleges and universities... The strength of this book is these individual insights and the opportunity they give for readers to assess, by comparison, their approaches to these roles." (Choice)"This new handbook addresses changes in the role of the chief academic officer and today's best practices in faculty leadership, strategic planning, curriculum development, technology use in the classroom, and governance... A practice resource for deans, presidents, trustees, and chief academic officers." (Council of Independent Colleges Newsletter)"Recommended." (American Reference Books Annual)

Interesting book with a full picture of the CAO role in higher ed.

This was interesting and useful. Reading one chapter at a time broke it into digestible units. Focus on relationships with other cabinet colleagues was especially useful.

Straight-forward and an easy read.

Best book to learn about this role.

In most North American Universities, the office of Provost is so established that a handbook devoted to describing its role might seem superfluous. However, at a time when many British Universities have recently introduced, or are considering introducing the office, it is timely to be reminded that the role of the Provost in America is in flux. In pre-Reformation Britain, Provosts were commonly the chief subordinate of an Abbot, having responsibility for all those matters of a monastery’s function outside the Dean’s priestly jurisdiction. In the UK, a shadow of this tradition lingers in the title of the Head of colleges such as Worcester and the Queen’s in oxford, Kings in Cambridge, and University College London. In most major universities in the USA, the office of Provost in its current form is not as ancient as all that. With few exceptions, such as U Penn and Columbia, Provosts were only introduced in the middle of the 20th Century, and at Harvard the post has only been continuous since the mid-1990s.Even within the USA, the position of the Provost in the organization varies, but typically they are described as the Chief Academic Officer, and have management responsibility for the academic Deans who head the, typically, nine to twelve Schools or Faculties. Separately reporting to the President, most Universities have Vice-Presidents responsible for areas such as Finance, Estates, Development, Governance, and so on, sometimes arranged under a single Executive V-P. There are numerous variations on this structure, particularly concerning the whether offices for institutional analysis, planning, budgeting and staff development fall within the jurisdiction of the office of the Provost, the Executive vice-President or the President themselves. For readers unfamiliar with North American University administration, the Provost’s Handbook’s silence on this background might make it a little inaccessible at first, though Chapter 4 by R Michael Tanner, who was Provost at U Illinois, Chicago, entitled “the Scope of Academic Leadership at the Top” touches on the main features of the role. Each chapter is an essay by one or more former Provost, President or other University Leader, that bring a colourful range of perspectives to bear on the challenges faced by Provosts today. The chapters are grouped into two sections; the former looking thematically at sources of pressure and opportunities for change, and the latter at how to build productive relations with key players, such as the administrative VPs. Inevitably, as a multi-author work, the quality of evidence, analysis and explanation is very variable, but there are many nuggets of information and advice that any aspiring University leader would find invaluable. Readers looking for tables of institutional data, formal analysis of organization structures, worked examples of different approaches to budgeting or examples of dashboards and balanced scorecards to monitor delivery of strategy will be disappointed. Their absence from a work described as a “Handbook” does seem a surprising omission, and will limit its utility for budding provosts. However, as a more informal vade mecum, it provides plenty of useful hints.Repeating themes are the increasing complexity of University organizations, the danger of administrative bloat and faculty disengagement, the challenge of diversifying income and restraining costs, and the heightened awareness of the requirements of fee-paying students. Particularly useful advice is to be found in the Chapter on “how to lead the Faculty as a first among equals”, by Linda McMillin, a successful Provost who has returned to mainstream teaching and research. She eloquently makes the case that building mutual trust, understanding and respect between academics, Deans and the Provost is an essential, effortful and daily task, and gives many useful illustrations of successful models. John D Simon, Provost and Professor Chemistry at U Virginia, writes a thoughtful chapter on “strategic planning and the Office of Institutional Research”, which again highlights the need for consensus-building and a stepwise approach to achieving strategic change. When captaining your Faculty flotilla through the uncharted seas of learning, to have no agreed plan is to guarantee chaos and dissipation; but to stick rigidly to one compass bearing irrespective of the urgent calls from the crew is to risk loss of the whole convoy on the shores of an undiscovered continent.

#32,096 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am a fan of Natusch's Caged Series and was eager to give this one a try as well. This one was somewhat interesting but wasn't as captivating for several reasons. The first is that one of the things I loved about Caged was how easy it was to relate to the heroine and how she seemed like someone you'd like to know. The heroine in this story was not that way by design (it seems to be the premise of the book) but none of the supporting characters were easy to relate to either. It kind of read like a B movie. I was a bit disappointed because I've enjoyed her other series so much. I won't be reading the second book in the series.

Another series by this author that I am hooked on. I love the Caged world and I am heart broken to hear that the Caged Series is coming to an end, however, I am hopeful that this Unborn Series will fill that void. This first book did a little of that. While this book can be read as a stand alone, I would highly recommend that one reads the Caged Series first since your enjoyment would be greatly increased. This group of PC fighters do not seem as disciplined or polished as those we were introduced to in the Caged Series. I'm sure there is more of a back story to this that will become apparent as the series progresses.I love Khara. While Ruby in the Caged Series is dealing with her dark side, Khara is struggling with her Light. And then there is Sean, the only cross over character from the Caged Series so far. I hope we get to see much more of him and how he is going to have to navigate the 2 very complex women that have entered is life. While Sean is only in a very few scenes in the book, the bits we get to see of him are very illuminating as Sean is depicted from the viewpoint of his Detroit PC brethren. Then there is the dark, conflicted, sexy Oz character, who also appears to have much history with Sean as well as another PC brother, Kierson. Promises of so much more dark, sexy menace to come!I cannot wait to dive into the next book in the series, 'Unseen'.

Unborn is a mix of paranormal and mythology and is a spin off to the Caged Series also by Natusch, which I recommend. Don't let the mythology scare you away. There are big myths that are commonly known and explained well with a new take.Khara was raised in the Underworld by Hades like a loved adopted daughter and a ward to Demeter. She has learned over centuries to be logical and turn off emotions. Unexpectedly, she is taken from her home in the Underworld and drop off in snowy Detroit. Quickly she is found by the leader of the Petronus Ceteri (PC). All of the members of the PC are sons of Ares and are the police to the supernatural/mythological community that includes Gargoyles, and Breathers (unique to this story). The members of a PC and a guy named Oz set out to find out why she is here while the paranormal community starts to go crazy. The characters are one of the things I love about Natusch's books. They are written very well and have many layers to them. Unborn is no exception. Khara is logical, smart and unemotional on the outside, she still is likeable. You like Khara because she is strong but has a naivete because she has been thrown into this situation that starts to illicit emotions she never once had. The members of the PC all have unique personalities that draw you in. Oz also pulls you in even though he pushes you away. While the story is full of action, it also shows the growth of Khara, Oz and the members of the PC. The action and growth are in perfect harmony. There is mystery, love and betrayal. I couldn't put it down. This is set to be a series. I don't know how many there will be in the series. I will buy and read them all. It ends a little cliffy which I don't mind.I wrote this review not because I got an ARC but because this book is awesome!

How could I not give this five stars when I am such a fan! Ok, but seriously. I have read many reviews comparing Khara to Ruby (the Caged series) and I have to say that their similarity is that they are characters that were thought up, and produced by a genius. Amber knows how to produce a character in a setting that is unfamiliar to the reader, yet she still pulls you right in to their life as if you are sharing all their new experiences together. The main character, Khara, from the Underworld, is thrown in to Detroit meeting her brothers and experiencing all the turmoils they must deal with on the day to day. I won't give anything away, but she might seem like a rather bland character; rather she has been around for millennia and has just learned that keeping a rather stoic personality has served her well in the Underworld. The love that is shared within the story is heart warming and, at times, the love that you develop for the characters makes you want to jump off your seat and slam someone in the nose when they are in trouble. I feel that if someone read this and didn't think it was a fantastic book, they should read the Caged series. Or at least Tarnished. I feel that I have the background to go in to this setting and know what is going on. I do, however understand how someone might look in to it and feel that some things are just thrown in there. They are references people! All together this book was fantastic! I plan to read all of Amber's book from here on out since I have been hooked after reading Caged! I have also got two friends hooked on the series too and they love it! I will never stop recommending these books!

A great author. If you have read any of his work all anyone one needs say is this is more of the same. Make sure you read the first book in the series first. When I was a lad, back in the dark ages when Indians went on the warpath (even before Native American was a phrase) good hard SF told about a far off future. Today the same genre refers to tomorrow, and increasingly today. He always writes a good story wrapped around scientific advances that are on the cusp of reality. He is very much a modern Isaac Asimov. If you can't tell, this review is from a reader that is nearly as old as dirt.If Douglas Richards is a new author to you, try a sample. If you like what you read there, you will like the rest. He doesn't disappoint.

Douglas E. Richards has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The way he intricately weaves near futuristic scientific possibilities into an action packed plotline is one of the many reasons I devour his books as soon as they're released! I have Kindle Unlimited, so I can read all his novels for free, but I BUY THEM! Why? Because I always want them available. I reference them in conversations and then pull them up on my phone. Now, I know can be a stand alone novel, but do yourself a favor and read Split Second first. Then, you should read all his novels. They're just THAT good!If you're hesitant about this because of the Kim Jung Un part, so was I. I will tell you that I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was worked into the plot. I'm not one to give away a bunch of spoilers, so just read it!Finally, if you are someone who skips the "Author's Notes" when you read a book, you do NOT want to miss Richards'! He always has a section at the end of his novels titled "What's real and what isn't." Knowing it's there makes me want to get through the story faster so I can learn more! It's fascinating to learn about new scientific developments that are in the works! Some may even shock you!So, basically, JUST READ IT!

I was drawn to stick with the story wanting to know how it would unfold. I read the first book in the series so I understood the premise and knew something about the characters. It certainly gives one pause and makes you wonder if the ends justify the means as well as wondering what the future might hold.Might biggest problem with the second book is that it is at least one third longer than it needed to be which occasionally made me put it down and walk away. I regularly found myself grumbling, enough already, I get it! It desperately needed some editing and pays got tedious. I was switching between the audible and Kindle version and I'm not sure I would have plowed on had I just been reading it. Looking car rides make you more patient. I also felt it was a little predictable... All wrapped up with a neat little bow.I'm glad I finished it but I am not sure if I am going back for more. 3+ would probably be a more accurate rating.

Imagine time travel where duplication of the traveler is a "side effect" and too many duplications result in gross overpopulation? What scientific advances may be accelerated and what dangers may be created with no hope of containment or control? Before you imagine taking a position, and well before the end of Time Frame, the reader is taken on a magnificent journey and the possibility of understanding the existence of a "fifth dimension" and the far reaches of galactic travel. Bring in a whole new meaning to "what might be out there" and what that might mean for the human race, the reader is transported on so many levels to beg the question "are you ready for the ride of your life?" Douglas Richards exceeds all expectations as the many dimensional driver here.

If you haven't read the first in this series, you will be fine starting with this one. It would be better to read the first, but you won't be lost.I've read all of Douglas Richards' books and enjoy them all. This book was no exception to the rule. The characters are all very well described so you feel like you know them all. I really enjoy then theories and sci-fi he brings into his books and the detailed explanation and resources at the end ibn the books. So!shortage things in the book really make you think about how things could really go in our life.Definitely add this book to your list and enjoy his writing.

Douglas E Richards fast became one of my newest favorite authors. His writing style leaves you thinking "why hasn't anyone done this yet?" Split Second was the first book of his I read and from there I was hooked. Time Frame is a well written follow up. The plot to take out Kim Jong Un is a fantasy we all have and you'll just have to read it to see if the group succeeds or not. Although he says it's a stand alone novel, I'd suggest reading the first one to get up to speed. The 2 novels are not ordinary time travel stories in the sense you can go back to any time you want anywhere in the world. It's much more plausible and makes so much more sense. You'll definitely want to read it more than once to fully appreciate the story.

Just awful - stereotyped, exaggerated characters, deux ex machina all over the place. I forced myself to read #1 (meh) but I couldn't get past page 46 in this one.

Lots of plot twists I didn't see coming and wonderful character development and interactions. Just when I thought I knew where things were going, the whole landscape changed. Douglas E. Richards is one of my favorite authors and I've read everything he has written. I especially love how well researched his books are, and that at the end of each novel, he details what is real, what is likely to be real in the near future, and what is fiction (but so based in science, who knows?) - that's what makes it so compelling.
