I just got this in the mail from amazon and Im impressed. This book has guidelines on how to tailor the origin myths of vampires in your setting. YOu can be as detailed or as vague as you want. There are rules for bloodgods, roman cults, and vampires as curses. The best part is the chapter on breath stealing, a great mechanic and very thematic of old vampire legends from the East. Basically its rules and guidelines for vampires who reach certain blood potency to steal the breath (or life force) of their victims. I certainly like it!This is a great supplement for settings where exploring the origins of vampires is a key elelment of the game. It certainly adds depth and mood to any game but the best part is that it lets YOU the storyteller decide where vampires come from.

This book is full of fun and interesting concepts to put into any Vampire campaign. The book goes over myths that Kindred have in their world. Almost all of the plot devices put into this book are never fully answered, they are left up to the players to decide if they are true or not. This book talks about possible origins of Kindred, a drug made by Kindred that is highly addictive to all, A plague that causes frenzy in any vampire infected, and much more to entertain players for a long time. I highly recommend this to fans of this series.

One of the best things about Mythologies is the fact that it's purely a background book. It provides a number of origin stories for vampires in the Vampire: The Requiem setting. None of the origins are exclusive of one another, ambitious storytellers can easily make all of the origin myths part of their chronicle. Each of the origin stories includes sample organizations surrounding that story.Mythologies also includes modern myths or urban legends about vampires such as dream drinking, breath stealing, and drugs that make the damned feel human, if only for a brief time. Stats and rules are kept to a minimum, players and storytellers looking for new vampiric disciplines or rituals would be better served by many of the other books in the Requiem line. The third and final chapter of Mythologies focuses on threats to Vampires both mundane and supernatural. Whispered legends of ghouls bent on destroying vampires, frenzy-inducing plagues allow storytellers to inject an even healthier dose of paranoia into their chronicle.Mythologies is exactly as my title describes it - a fantastic idea mine for storytellers or enterprising players who wish to start their own rumours into their chronicle. This book is simply to help storytellers and players alike expand the scope of their chronicles by taking advantage of the mysteries of the vampiric condition and the open origin story in the Requiem setting.

The core book of Vampire the Requiem kept the origin of the Kindred totally open, not even giving one story of their beginnings. This book fills in the past of the Kindred with various optional stories- that the Kindred are the descendants of traitorous blood gods, that they come from people who were too afraid to die, that they were meant to be the faithful servants of gods of light and fire but betrayed them and earned their curse..... All in all, very fascinating reading. My only real problem with this book was the Antagonists section. Because I skipped the above section and went straight to the Antagonists section, I initially considered this supplement a waste of money. Honestly, the only thing I liked in that section was the Frenzy Plague, and I had a downright hatred of Smiling Jack or whatever his name is. It's this section that brings the whole book down for me, and that which caused the Four Star rating. So, in short- Most of the sections, 5 out of 5. The Antagonists section, 2 out of 5.

I finished this magnificent, life-changing book 1/2 hour ago, and I hope to read it again soon. Powers takes on the single most important topic of our time: the effects of humans on the planet and the possibility of a future. Through 9 varied characters, he brings to life the old forests, the lives of individual trees, the quest for AI, and the love people are capable of, among other themes. It's a tour de force of creation and, at 500 pages, it could have gone on forever and I would have been happy. It will also break your heart, but it's not completely without hope. Highest recommendation.

When looking for a literary analogue, The Overstory is almost something of a Dostoevskian novel. The themes are different of course—-Powers is not interested in discussing God or the basis of morality—but one does get the sense in reading the Overstory that the plot, characters and various literary devices are all at the service of the author’s philosophical vision. And by philosophical I don’t mean esoteric fine points of metaphysics but the larger question of the future of life on earth—in both Powers and Dostoevsky there is almost a return to the themes of ancient apocalyptic writings. While Powers certainly doesn’t need authentication of his narrative power—he has already won a National Book Award among many literary prizes—I can vouchsafe that he is an excellent storyteller. Similarly, his ability to create characters that may stretch the bounds of believability but still generate passionate sympathetic feelings in the reader is also beyond doubt. Thus, I found myself reading the Overstory with every free moment I had over two days and loving nearly every page. The overarching philosophy of the work is that human beings, either willfully or not, do not understand the amount of destruction they are causing to the world’s flora. Plants and trees, one of the oldest of the earth’s kingdoms, are only now beginning to be understood as beings that communicate, learn and in some instances even care for their own offspring. The human caused biocide of the world’s flora is a tragedy not only because these trees may have medicinal or other useful properties for humans but also because each one is a beautiful product of nature fashioned over millions of years. In the author’s view, we seem to be destroying some of the most important parts of creation, so that everyone can, so to speak, have a bigger projection screen TV.Nor are biofuels, renewable energy or other technological fixes likely to stem this downward spiral. Even virtual reality is only going to be as interesting as the humans who create it and so cannot be a genuine substitute for the complexity of what nature provides for us gratis in the real world. The author seems to envision only two scenarios: either humankind will wipe itself out and the earth will generate new, unforeseeable solutions to life or artificial intelligence will impose a solution on a humanity which cannot save itself. To those who have read optimistic works like Steven Pinker’s Enlightenment Now or related perspectives such environmental pessimism is somewhat startling. I can’t say that I am fully persuaded by Powers’ perspective but I can appreciate the accuracy of his science, the literary craftsmanship that went into embodying these ideas and the importance of his overall message. So, if you are willing to endure a literary punch to the stomach and put on apocalyptic glasses then you will thoroughly enjoy The Overstory. But, though a love of trees thoroughly permeates the book, it is hardly a walk in the park.

A wise, deep, moving epic by an exceptional writer. I was totally entranced. There are fabulous stand-alone set pieces, engaging characters, glorious prose and a soul-stirring look into the inner lives of trees. It’s one of a handful of books of which I can say I was a different person when I finished it. Bravo, Mr. Powers. This may very well be your masterpiece.

The first chapter alone is worth the price of entry -- if it were a stand-alone short story, it would be the best short story I've ever read. I have read a number of this author's works, and mostly enjoyed them, but there was always something missing. This book has it all.

How have I lived and read this long and not known of Richard Powers? What a writer and what a book.If I were still in my 20s or even 30s I would be buying copies of this book and thrusting them all on my friends and telling them it is a must read. Now that I'm considerably older than that, I'm not so naive. You have to come to it of your own. The trees themselves will call you do it, just as in the book.Of course, it's a clarion call to our species to stop wreaking havoc on the earth and all its species, including our own. And, of course, it is a cry in the dark. We will destroy ourselves and then the planet can begin to recover. It's happened many times during the earth's long history and will happen many times again. Too bad for us. Let's hope some of those magnificent giants out live us to help heal earth after we have destroyed it.Nevertheless, read this book and try to change the "live only for today and the next dollar" ethos.

I'm half way through it and I am finding it very hard to put down. This differs from his other novels in its accessibility to the average reader- I hope it will bring him the popularity he so richly deserves. This is an immensely readable novel- he seems to have improved his ability to communicate his rather esoteric ideas to an audience that is not necessarily well versed in science and/or music. His characters are well drawn and compelling- I find myself thinking about them often, and not wanting to end the book, because I will miss all of them. It is a uniquely American novel in many ways, and yet, of course, its themes are universal. Powers writes a lot about the connections between art and science; this more than most of his books, is about humans and our connection to nature. It's a common subject, and yet he gives it his own special twist. It's his most accessible novel since In The Time Of Our Singing. I have to say that the phrase "Great American Novel" keeps coming to me- I'm not sure if I am being hyperbolic.

Review

“Truly magnificent… [a] well-researched, well-written and absolutely definitive biography” –Andrew Roberts, The Wall Street Journal“Superb… the best, most comprehensive, and most balanced single-volume biography of Washington ever written. [Chernow’s] understanding of human nature is extraordinary and that is what makes his biography so powerful.” –Gordon S. Wood, The New York Review of Books“Chernow displays a breadth of knowledge about Washington that is nothing short of phenomenal… never before has Washington been rendered so tangibly in such a smart, tenaciously researched volume as Chernow's opus… a riveting read...” –Douglas Brinkley, The Los Angeles Times“Until recently, I’d never believed that there could be such a thing as a truly gripping biography of George Washington…Well, I was wrong. Ron Chernow’s huge (900 pages) Washington: A Life, which I’ve just finished, does all that and more. I can’t recommend it highly enough—as history, as epic, and, not least, as entertainment. It’s as luxuriantly pleasurable as one of those great big sprawling, sweeping Victorian novels.”  –Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker“[Ron Chernow] has done justice to the solid flesh, the human frailty and the dental miseries of his subject—and also to his immense historical importance… This is a magnificently fair, full-scale biography.” –The Economist

One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.

This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.

It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington” is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read. The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…”or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…” This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.

My 8 year old has moderate Autism. So he has issues with pragmatic speech and reading emotions of others. He has trouble with reading comprehension. He is only on the first book but he is thrilled! Yesterday he ran out telling me what he read about. Which is huge, with other books he isnt able to tell me a thing without me asking specific questions. He said, "its like I have an imagination" and I think he means he is understanding the feelings and thoughts of the characters. This is a giant step in the right direction for us.

Both my children love this series and it got the youngest to enjoy reading for the first time! And it didn't help that I'm enjoying them also...

Bought the box set as a Christmas gift for 7 year old son. The illustrations pulled him in and the story kept him. He reads these every night and I have to tell him to turn off the light. I was looking for a series to set the hook for the love of reading - mission accomplished!

Love this series. As always, Kazu Kibuishi's art style continues to please.

Really engaging and imaginative. Both my 9 and 13 year olds ate it up. I found it good fun and really beautifully executed. The artwork is simple yet superior.detailsThe artworks is a mix of subtle, fully executed backgrounds with a more anime-manga-cartoon type of characters, and it works. Narative atyle and attention to blocking and framing make it visually approachable to kids around 9 or 10. The plot is not simple, and the concepts are probably a bit over the head of most really young kids. My kids stayed up very late reading each book. appaerntly there are going to be 9 total books so know that there will be some anticipation..

Bought these for my 9 year old grandson. Before delivery, I borrowed first two volumes from my local library, and got hooked on story line and wonderful graphics, (I'm 68 years old). I've asked my grandson if I could borrow the volumes 3-7 after he's done reading them, because I need to know what happens. This is a great series and will be checking other works by Kazu Kibuishi!

These books are great. I love the art style. These are not just for kids. Sometimes it can get kind of dark.My only complaint is during shipping something happened to the books. They sustained damage to the top and bottom of their spines. Though, not enough to warrant me returning them. At some point, I will upgrade to the hardback (which I should have gotten in the first place).

Pre-ordered this for my youngest. She loved it! Finished the series in record time.
