Thomas Merton is simply incredible and in my opinion the most significant religious for half a century. This book is a fine treatment about the realities of love in ouir lives. He has a way of making the deepest and even mystical matters understandable and he more than any author has been the most influential for me 1972. That's a long time. He is a gifted, humorous, lucid and superb author. You cannot get much better than him if you are interested in a real "spiritual life".
Things that were "beliefs" become convictions. You realize writers who always seemed to radiate a weird glow are actually your witnesses, and that they, as much as your confidants and Mother Church (so easy to stray from) have managed to help keep you "in life" until you could hear the message all the way down. For me, key chapters are "Symbolism..." (very Percy, that one), and the meditation on "Death." Merton even cracks a joke here and there. Seek and ye shall actually find. Imagine that.
I read this book about 5 times before I became Christian. His essay "Cargo Cults of the South Pacific" is one of the best pieces I have read by anyone on any subject. It clearly explains the psychology of idolatry and compares the primitive attempts at association with modern man's response to TV commercials.
I love all of Merton's writings. This one being one of his earlier writing is in an older style (pre vatican). That didn't bother me, being old myself. What I find absolutely amazing about Merton is his simple, creative way of saying the deep spiritual things. It is as though he is sitting there speaking with you and you almost sense that he hears your question.I'll buy anything by merton. I've bought just about all of his books however because I lend them I'm often at a loss for finding one of my favourites in my collection.
Reading and conteplating Life and Living can b a life changing experience
There is nothing more profound, truthful and simple written about love that I have seen. Merton is always a profoundly satisfying while combining intellectual, and spiritual truths that stand as comfort and rebuke to a chaotic and superficial world.
