OK Book. Light on some of the technical issues related to lens selection, f-stop, depth of field, etc. More focused (excuse the pun) on picture composition.
I recently purchased a new digital camera and got this book as a guide to help me understand the intricacies of using my new camera. This book does an excellent job of introducing you to the world of digital cameras. Beginning with the first chapter where Miotke, introduces you to the various modes on digital cameras, the book is easy to understand and follow. I especially liked his chapter on "Twenty Popular Photo Assignments" and have been following each of the assignments, not only to get to know my camera, but also to improve my skills. All of these assignments are completed using your digital cameras basic settings. No need to deal with aperture, shutter speed, etc. Although the book also includes two chapters on those very subjects if you want to get more advanced in your photography. For the time being I am happy just learning how to take better photos with my cameras automatic settings. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to take better photos with a digital camera.
This is a simple, concise book that covers important elements of photography without any filler. It's full of stunning photos and reveals how to capture some of your own using different techniques. Especially helpful in the back of the book is a section of photos displayed in the book with the camera settings used to take each of the various types of photos. So you can find a photo similar to one you want to take and start with the settings for that photo and adjust them to get what suits your taste.
I first bought another guide for my granddaughter at her mother's recommendation. It wasn't very good. I then ordered BetterPhoto Basics, and she absolutely LOVES it!!! It's easy to follow, and has beautiful color photographs for visual instruction. THIS BOOKLET HAS TRIPLED MY GRANDDAUGHTER'S INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY!!! Thank you, Jim Miotke!
Here is my story: I bought a super Digital compact camera but I had no idea how to make it work. I studied the whole manual to learn the dozens of controls avalaible. Then I learnt how to modify the shutter speed, aperture. ISO...But the camera manual does not explain you what to achieve with these controls. I then gave a try to Mr Miotke book, which is basically written for guys like me: absolute beguiners. I think the books covers most, if not all, the issues that a photographer should understand. Maybe not with a huge depth, but enough to give you an insight of the matter and then let you practice to master the issue. I like this approach.The book is of very good quality.I am happy that I read the book. Now it is time to practice.
I bought this on the advice of a photographer friend and as an overwhelmed beginner have found it to be a very good reference. If you're like me, you can sit through a class and think you understand everything - only to draw a blank when holding your camera and actually trying to change all of those settings. Then do you leave everything on auto and end up using your nice DSLR as an expensive point and shoot?Change all that - buy (and study) this book! It's organized into bite sized chapters with topics easily found and well explained. F-stops, apertures, ISOs and much more suddenly make sense.
This is a really great book for beginner and intermediate photographers. I am at the intermediate level and I have loved this book. I do not have a DSLR, I have a Canon PowerShot SX50 which is a point and shoot with DSLR options. I loved that this book did not assume a lot of pre-knowledge, he really explains things at a level I could understand and retain. Also, I loved it that for the photo challenges, he gives the settings for both a point-and-shoot and a DSLR. This has been a wonderful reference and it has already helped me improve my photography a great deal. I am working my way through the 20 photo assignments, which is really fun to complete each one and share the results with friends. Highly recommend!
This is a uniquely excellent resource for anyone from beginner through intermediate photographer. Both my wife and I find ourselves returning to this book for inspiration and instruction. It is by far the most accessible and just plain enjoyable photography book I've ever owned.Starts with a short section on generic camera controls and operation (it is not, however, a detailed "buttons" manual). Section 2 covers composing, focus, and lighting with plenty of before and after picture comparisons. Section 3 has "assignments" to practice, including thought provoking example photos. The next several sections cover more detailed and advanced topics, explained clearly and well illustrated.
BetterPhoto Basics by Jim Miotke is an excellent resource for those just delving into digital photography. Unlike many other "beginner" books, Miotke doesn't spend page after page on techniques or explanations, instead keeping his descriptions short and to the point. My students find this book to be a great beginner's book, helping them go on to the more advanced books by Kelby, Evening, and others.Full-color throughout, Miotke's book will take you from "Don't Get Too Close" to what lens compression is and how it affects your images. He explains why you should or would need a tripod, when to turn on the flash, what focal length is, composition, framing, and more. For a beginner, this is the book I would recommend to get you started. If you have a good grasp of the basics, this is NOT the book for you.
