I keep thinking I can't be shaken up yet again by another Holocaust novel. And yet this book grabs me by the gut and turns me inside out emotionally with its vivid, historically accurate descriptions of this most horrid chapter in human history. For that part of the novel alone I must give it five stars. I was swept along by the story of Lena’s life and enjoyed the pacing and the buildup of the plot. That said, I agree with a few other reviewers regarding the credibility as well as predictability of the plot. Those parts were much weaker, and I almost wish the book had been about Lena’s life from her perspective back then, rather than the somewhat contrived story happening in the present time. So I still prefer "Once We Were Brothers," which I loved with no reservations through the last page. But don’t let these comments take away from the overall value of the book. I set a very high bar of expectations for an author I like, and sometimes end up being his or her harshest critic. But the bottom line is that I loved reading this book. In fact, I liked it so much, I read it slowly, to savor some every night. Sometimes it's not the destination but the journey that counts. This was an “unputtable-down” book.

Descriptive and detailed of the war in Poland under German occupation, the story depicts the life Jews were forced to endure, the terror, the cruelty, the starvation, in the cities, towns, ghettos, and death camps. Using facts and statistics, the author creates a realistic vision of WW II, in a heart thumping, fast-paced, mystery.Eighty-nine year old Lena Woodward reveals her tragic story of events that occurred during the Second World War to Catherine Lockhart and Liam Taggart in present day Chicago, Il. The lawyer-detective couple, intrigued by Lena’s moving account of her experiences during WW II, decide, to help Lena solve the seventy-year old mystery that has plagued her: the case of two missing babies.

I highly recommend all four of RH Balson's books. But start with Once We Were Brothers if possible and read the 4 books in order. Its not necessary for the story line to make sense but it does follow in a sequence that is worth reading in order. These are 4 of the most enjoyable reads I have found in sequence books. I ordinarily stay away from them because I find they get boring as they progress. All four of these books will hold your interest until the ends of each one. And you could just read one of them and be totally entertained from beginning to end. They all come to their own conclusions without lead ins to the next book, which I appreciate. I actually read Karolina's Twins first but then went back and read the others in correct order. I cannot wait for his next book.

I read some of the negative reviews and found them unnecessarily critical. This is an easy read of a difficult subject. It highlights strength and determination in the face of misery and torture. Despite the dark subject the reader is kept hopeful, like the character in the book. Like "Once We Were Brothers" it clearly describes the manipulative and methodical advancement of the Nazi's. The reader can feel and imagine what it is like to be stripped of freedom, enslaved and dehumanized. It is a gripping portrayal of the rise and fall of the Nazis. I could not help but think of the current environment in N. Korea and China and the indiscriminate slaughter of MILLIONS of people (not just jews) like they were mere vermin. The novel gets off to a slow start due to the way it is written but the 2nd half of the book totally sucks the reader in.I purchased the book and would gladly purchase others for use as gifts.

I have read many books about the horrors of the Holocaust; most that I had to take breaks from and were very hard reads for me. And then along came Karolina's Twins. How do you write a book so warmly about so horrific a subject? I was drawn in so by each of the characters. They almost became real to me and I couldn't wait to find they had reached the end of their sadnesses. Every day was a test of their strength and their bravery. It made me realize that there had to be so many unknown heroes who gave up their lives in the name of humanity. Although I surmised the ending of this book, I have to admit that it brought me to tears. In my opinion this was a very well written book and I would look forward to reading more from Ronald Balson.

This book is #3 in Balson's Liam Taggart and Catherine Lockhart series, and I can highly recommend this series. The historical parts of these books are fascinating, the author writes an easy, flowing read, which makes you feel like you are right there in the center of all the action. This book centers on a lady hiring an attorney, Catherine, to research a loss set of twins. The twins disappeared during the Nazi invasion of Poland. It's a riveting story, with twists and turns , add to it historical background of the Nazi camps, the brutality of the that regime, the survival story of normal people that evolves, I found it to be a really good read. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the fact that some of chapters I found to be repetitive but all in all for me it was a good book, and I highly recommend this series, but suggest you start with book #1.

This past Summer 2017 I had the privilege and honor and with much sorrow visited Krakow,Poland. I am not Jewish, I am Roman Catholic, and stories like the one in this book are so moving. How these people suffered. I went to Auschwitz, just had to. It’s unbelievable! Still to this day you can feel the pain and suffering of so many people. This story is the most moving one of all that I have read. The author puts you in with Lina and you live her life in this book. I loved it and hope you will too.
