Amazon has the bad habit of lumping reviews of multiple editions of a book without regard as to author/editor or publisher, to the detriment of the buyer's choosing an edition, so I write to make a few comments on the 984,562 editions of "Paradise Lost" listed for purchase. I have used the titles as listed by Amazon to help find the editions I refer to, and, with the exception of the books by Kastan, Lanzara, and BookCaps, the ones I discuss below are ones I own and am familiar with. The version with an introduction and comments by Pullman has text that is large and readable, line numbers and some nice illustrations, taken from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688. It is a nice copy for those who want just the text of the poem. The text is based on Stephen Orgel's 2008 Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics) which has been modernized presumably with respect to capitalization, spelling and punctuation. The comments by Pullman are worthwhile, but, while he may be a very good writer, he is not a scholar of Milton. Unlike Orgel, there are no annotations or notes to explain Milton's often arcane language and allusions. For readers seeking annotated versions, I suggest the following. The ultimate edition of Milton Alastair Fowler's Milton: Paradise Lost: it has been called the Bible of Milton scholars; one review I saw called it suitable for graduate students majoring in Milton. It is one of the few available based on the first edition of "Paradise Lost", published in 1667, but Fowler states that it also includes the additions made in the second edition of 1674 --- the version that most of today's editors use. Know that Fowler has produced a very, very scholarly version with many, many notes, sometimes to the point that they leave only two or three lines of the poem on the page, so I strongly urge using the "Look Inside" feature before deciding to buy it. I recommend Fowler's 1998 Milton: Paradise Lost (2nd Edition) edition in used paperback ---- reissue in 2006 edition with a new cover and much higher price. The blurb from the publisher on the Pullman webpage misleads the reader by mentioning "This is the first fully-annotated, old-spelling edition ..." It ain't (as the small print says). I can't find the actual book this blurb refers to, there are several that might be the one mentioned. One such version, with very favorable recommendations, is Barbara K. Lewalski's 2007 Paradise Lost that reproduces the original language, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italics of the 1674 text. Its annotations are on the same page. Again, I would again urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."(Incidentally, I was able to find a .pdf copy of it online).Another annotated edition, again with those on the same page, that sticks close to the original 1674 text (but with some minor modernization) is Merritt Y. Hughes' Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics), first published in 1935, and revised in 1962. It is advertised as one popular with college professors for their classes, whatever that may mean. From what I gather, Fowler has replaced Hughes as the scholarly version to use.The edition by Hughes was taken in 2003 by David Scott Kastan (Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics)) and edited more extensively, again with the annotations on the same page. Incidentally, Kastan's comments on how he edited, along with comments on any editor's choices when dealing with Milton, are well worth reading, and can be found under "Textual Introduction" using the "Look Inside" feature. I urge reading them to understand how and why there are so many different editions of Milton.Yet another annotated edition that comes close to the original is by John Leonard's Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics). The ad for this version states that the text has been modernized to the degree of reducing some capitals and italics, and correcting the spelling and some punctuation. It is annotated, but not to the degree of Fowler --- but the notes are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page as seems customary and which I personally find difficult to use because of constantly having to flip between pages. Again, I would urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."There are many other scholarly editions available in addition to the ones I have mentioned here, including one online at the John Milton Reading Room at Dartmouth College. For those who might like a less challenging version of "Paradise Lost", I suggest BookCaps "translation" (Amazon's words, not mine) Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English or at an even less difficult level, Joseph Lanzara's John Milton's Paradise Lost In Plain English: A Simple, Line By Line Paraphrase Of The Complicated Masterpiece. Should those prove too difficult, there might be somewhere a copy by Classics Illustrated comics, although a search by Google turns up nothing --- perhaps they never published one.Since each edition of "Paradise Lost" has its strengths and weaknesses, how does the buyer go about selecting an edition for purchase? To me, it's rather like buying a car --- ultimately based upon personal preference, but in this case, rather than engine and body style, determined by the way the editor has modified Milton's language and added annotations, and their degree of adherence to his original language --- some editors produce as little modernization as possible to retain Milton's original meter and rhythm for reading aloud, while others try for a more modern sound. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature, to see what the editor has done, to help making a decision.Whichever edition you buy, may you find great enjoyment in reading what I consider the greatest epic poem in the English language --- although you might agree more with what Donald Sutherland's character, Jennings, had to say about it in the movie "Animal House": "Now what can we say about Milton's "Paradise Lost"? It's a very long poem. It was written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. ..... Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

I have three editions of Paradise Lost—Alastair Fowler's, Scott Elledge's and David Kastan's—, and this is definitely the most suited for my object and needs. David Kastan undertook a throughout update and revision of Merritt Y. Hughes' praised notes to Paradise Lost, and, although I haven't yet read Hughes' original work, I'm inclined to think that Kastan lives up to his illustrious predecessor. This edition includes a fine introduction to the poem, a glossary of uncanny words found in it, copious notes on historical, mythological and biblical allusions, and commentaries on Milton's style and poetics (they are neither as extensive nor as "scholarly" as Mr. Fowler's notes, but I find them more straightforward and elucidative to the average reader). Truly a work worthy of Milton's epic.

Milton is a genius, but the introduction and commentary on the poem are atrocious. It reminds me of Chesterton's comment about John and Revelation: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators."A far more helpful guide to Paradise Lost is Leland Ryken's volume in his series Christian Guides to the Classics. The detail is not as granular, but it's a far more reliable commentary on the poem itself.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Lost itself, but I want to confine this review to the Kindle edition of the Dover Thrift Editions. The Kindle edition has the text of the poem with straightforward formatting. Line breaks were consistent with what you would expect from print edition. There are no line numbers, but I have yet to see a kindle book with line number in poetry. My biggest complaint is that the footnotes, of which there are many, are not linked into the text, making them practically useless in the Kindle edition. It is difficult to switch back and forth between two locations without links, especially when you are not sure what part of the text will have a footnote. So, 5 stars for Paradise Lost, but just 3 stars for the Kindle edition. I would try and find one with linked footnotes.

The best way to read one of the foundational classics of the Western world is to take a class at a university from a professor who specializes in Milton and baroque English authors. The second best way is to buy an edition like this one and read everything between the covers. Paradise Lost plumbs deeply the Greeks, Romans, the Bible and other religious and secular literature. In addition, it is a commentary on the English monarchy and the storm that overtook it with the execution of Charles I in 1649. Milton played a role in that drama, and it is embedded in Paradise Lost. By the time he started writing, a restoration was afoot, and Milton had to be careful not to indict himself for his enemies, who were looking for an excuse to arrest him. In other words, to simply read only the surface story is to miss almost everything, though the story itself is wonderfully told.I read the Kindle edition. That made it easy to pop from text to notes as they came up, deepening my understanding, but a paper book with a couple of bookmarks would be almost as easy. Paradise Lost is the work of a believer, and if you are a believer not afraid to read outside the Bible, your efforts will be rewarded. If you are a lover of literature, as I am, this is the mother lode!Paradise Lost is written in verse. This version modifies the English for modern readers. Even so, it will be a project. Set goals, stick with it, and you will be rewarded. I came to look forward to my nightly reading. My goal was 100 lines a night. Usually, though, I went over. If you've ever wanted to read one of the big ones, read Paradise Lost. It's not a classic just because bookish scholars like it!

This is the in-depth look at history, architecture, culture and daily life of Cyprus. It's like taking a really interesting class with a really good professor. The other Blue Guides have been useful the same way. We're taking this one with us, too! It helps to really understand what you're looking at.

A very good guide for anyone that does not know much about the island. The author seems to be very familiar with the country and introduces the reader to a variety of aspects of the Cypriot culture. The only problem with any books on a specific country is that the reader has to understand that the author is expressing his opinions. A lot of the ideas specific to a culture may differ even within the people of the country. But this is a very good book overall.

My father ( sorry I have to boast here) worked with Dennis Smith in the belly of the beast while he was writing this wonderful book. He was in 38 truck which supported 82 at many fires in the south Bronx. Smith changed 38 to 48 in his novel. This novel was really the first book to lionize firefighters and give the public a view into the lives they lead. My father has nothing but the highest opinion of Dennis Smith as both a firefighter and as a man.Dennis during the 911 commission hearings again ran head first into a political firestorm by testifying to the criminally negligent leadership of the leadership of the city of New York on that fateful day that contributed to the loss of 343 firefighters. Smith debunked the myth that communications were lost due to the loss of the communications repeating tower when the first tower fell. The communications were lost because Giuliani's political cronies and lackeys who were appointed to run the department were criminally negligent and did not buy the department the new radios that had been badly needed and that had been promised to the rank and file. And that would have had the capability to broadcast with ease from the base of the towers to the roof of the towers. Is is logical to conclude that had the first tower of fallen and the new radios been delivered as promised the firefighters in the second towers would have been warned to get out. And would be alive and breathing today. Some estimate that as many as 150 plus firefighters could have been spared.

What a stellar book. Despite being written long before I ever worked in a fire department, the book still applies today. I'm not fond of fire books that are filled with bravado and self adulation; the shelves are littered with those. This is far from that. It's as much a social commentary on poverty, crime, arson, despair, and the people who sacrifice their lives in poverty stricken communities. Whether you work in law enforcement, EMS, or the fire service, there's a message here about what it means to work in public safety. There's parts of the book that will leave you in tears. It's an honest and introspective book.If you work in an urban area, as I do, there's parts of the job that tear away at your humanity and patience. There's things that haunt you in the dark corners of the mind. Scenes you wish you could unsee. It can be depressing. It can wear at the soul. It can make coming into work a dreaded chore. I found Dennis Smith's book to be cathartic in a way -- reading someone, four decades earlier, struggle with many of the same things that we struggle with today.

Report from Engine Co. 82 is an up close look at the working life of a South Bronx Firefighter in the 1970's. The author wrote this in 1972 when he had been a Firefighter for 8 years. There was an unprecedented amount of activity at this time in the South Bronx and the author does a great job of describing fireground activity before a Mask policy and constant running around to false alarms, rubbish fires, auto accidents , assaults and overdoses and the resultant death and injury. Dennis Smith was a cerebral warrior who read Steinbeck and Mailer to relax, quoted poetry and played the Bagpipes. As he describes the conditions of the area he works in he compares it to his own upbringing on the East side of Manhattan and his home 60 miles away upstate. His caring and those of his fellow Firefighters is evidenced in his sympathetic and questioning description of emergency conditions they respond to. This book was responsible for inspiring many future Firefighters and bringing to light the dangerous job they do. Over 40 years after this book was written the authors stories still ring true and are prime examples of a disciplined , dedicated and effective workforce in NYC. Recommended.

Story written by Dennis Smith who is a Fire fighter for Engine co. 82 in the South Bronx where it is the lower income area in the 1970's. Its one of the busiest areas if not the busiest for the amount of calls in country. This is a time where they have the fire pull boxes on the street or street corner which means they have a tremendous amount false calls with someone just walking or kids pull the handle just for the kicks. It is amazing going through the book that the people that live in these areas that the fire fighters laid down their lifes to protect use the fire fighters for sport by throwing rocks, shooting at and other means of harm. The story is a pretty good description of fire fighter life that being said there are some areas I wish there would have been a better description in certain areas for someone not in that profession.

I'm the nozzle man on a busy Engine company here in Connecticut. The senior guy of over 25 years recommended this book to me because he knew that I was an avid reader. I listened to him and picked it up on my Kindle, and once I did there were many late nights that followed of me laying in my bed at the firehouse reading this. It's a very honest, phenomenal portrayal of life in the FDNY and as a firefighter in general during some of the busiest years at the busiest Engine company. This book nails what it's like not only in the middle of a house fire, but also what it's like to live with a bunch of other guys in the firehouse. The jokes and pranks, the sad times and the happy times. It's all here and I would recommend this not only to anybody that's ever ridden backwards but also anyone that's ever been curious about what life as a fireman is really like.Pick this book up and you won't be able to put it down!

Yet another change management book of John Kotter. This time, the book zooms in on the first step of the 8-step Kotter change model. The style is much the same as the previous books, mildly academic, some examples, not a great amount of research, yet pretty well written. This books was shorter and I felt it was less insightful than the previous ones. Perhaps worthwhile if you are a Kotter fan, but if you are looking for a general change management book then better read his earlier work. The book sort-of consists of three parts. The first chapter introduces the well-known 8-step kotter change method: 1) create a sense of urgency, 2) form a guiding team, 3) create a compelling vision, 4) communicate, 5) empower the people to change, 6) celebrate short wins, 7) don't give up, 8) make the change stick. This part summarizes the method and shares the latest insights on it from Kotter. It then expands on the first step, which is the topic of the rest of the book. The second part has one chapter for each of the 4 tactics on how to create a sense of urgency. They are 1) bring the outside in, 2) behave with urgency every day, 3) find opportunities in crisis, 4) deal with the NoNos. To me, there was very little surprising content in this, it just summarized some practices. I didn't agree with all of them, especially the attitude of simply declaring a person a NoNo is not the most constructive way of managing change. The last part is about sustaining the urgency and the next steps. It is the typical action chapter of a management book. All in all, I found the book only mildly interesting. I find Kotter's change method a bit too ordered, structured and top-down. I've not ever experienced a true organizational change to go that way. Of course, it is only a model of what Kotter has seen in organization... but still... I'm not convinced that looking at change in that way is the best way to bring change. The new things in the book weren't particularly impressive and, as mentioned, the part about dealing with NoNos was highly disappointing. Yes, there are times you need to deal with people who obstruct change, but labeling them as obstructors is the least constructive thing I can imagine. All in all, an average book.

Critical to change management and change initiation is the need to both intellectually as well as emotionally inspire change in an organization. John Kotter captures the essence of that critical challenge in this easy to read and useful little management tome. In approximately 200 pages, Kotter takes the reader through both theory and practice (or strategy and tactics) on how and what to do to instill, promote and maintain a sense of urgency in an organization.Focusing on changing an organization's perspective outward, instilling and behaving with urgency at all times, finding opportunity in crisis and dealing with the negative nellies in any organization, Kotter takes the reader through a fairly well written and well organized set of approaches to combat complacency and instill urgency. His approaches range from light psychology to outright firing people, and after reading the book, you will be presented with a fairly large if not well discussed tool set for managing complacency and instilling urgency in an organization. If you are a manager, you need to at least be aware of the elements of psychology that Kotter discusses in the book - particularity being able to separate skeptics from naysayers and overcoming organizational inertia in our self and others. Worth the quick read.

John Kotter does an excellent job expounding on the most important and critical first component of initiating change: instilling a sense of true urgency in your actions and those around you. Building on his previous books, Our Iceberg is Melting, Leading Change, and The Heart of Change, Kotter distinguishes true urgency from its insidious opposite, complacency, and its evil twin, false urgency. With a clear-eyed resolve to acknowledge and address problems, initiate actions that call to people's hearts and minds (not their minds alone), and to address NoNos and other obstacles to change (and urgency killers), you can use Kotter's strategy and 4 tactics to instill a sense of urgency in your organization. A quick read that you can apply in your daily life immediately, it's a great book for those seeking to do more.

John Kotter is author of the now classic business book, Leading Change, published in 1996 and still a bestseller. In that previous book he suggested eight steps in leading change. The first of these was to develop a sense of urgency. As a follow-up Kotter has written A Sense of Urgency. In this 2008 book he clearly makes his point in the six page preface and the first three chapters that take up 61 of the 196 total pages of primary text. That is all you need to read to benefit from his VIP's [short for very important points].Here are some of the VIP's:*The single biggest error people make when they try to craft change is they do not "create a high enough sense of urgency among enough people to set the stage for making a challenging leap into some new direction." [viii]*Our biggest challenge is complacency. "We underestimate its power and its prevalence." [4]*Our second biggest challenge is a false sense of urgency. "A false sense of urgency is pervasive and insidious because people mistake activity for productivity." [9]*To increase a true sense of urgency, "create action that is exceptionally alert, externally oriented, relentlessly aimed at winning, making some progress each and every day, and constantly purging low value-added activities--all by always focusing on the heart and not just the mind. [60]To create a real sense of urgency I entreat you to go forward and do likewise. What is your first step to create a real sense of urgency in your congregation or other ministry setting?[...]

This was a required book for a Human Rights class I was taking. I hadn't studied Human rights before, so I found it useful, but a little boring and repetitive. Human rights seem like they should be common sense, but they get more complicated as you travel around the world, and deal with so many different cultures.

Great condition and was easy to buy for my school

college req.

Comprehensible for young members of our family (14- 17). Important work.

The four stars in this review are more for the organization and clarity of Donnelly's ideas and to a lesser extent for the ideas themselves. It works well as an introduction to the validity of human rights, the vocabulary of practitioners and some of the founding documents, particularly, in this case, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948. The Holocaust, plus the forced relocation of millions and the destruction of the most basic necessities to maintain life during World War II was the impetus for the Declaration (grammatically the upper case D is correct but if Donnelly were reading it aloud you could hear it) and the subsequent treaties that amended and extended it.An important aspect of the UDHR is that all the rights it enumerates and defines are individual and not group rights. The rights of ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities are dealt with as the rights of individuals belonging to the group, not the group itself as a collective entity, since human rights are literally the rights that one has simply because on is a human being. Human rights are equal rights; all people have the same human rights as everyone else. They are inalienable; one cannot stop being human no matter how badly one behaves or how monstrously one is treated. And they are universal in that we consider all members of the species Homo Sapiens as human beings and thus, automatically, holders of human rights.Human rights can be violated, ignored or abrogated and often are with impunity for the violators. Attempting to claim a right--the right of free assembly and association, for example, can lead, in many countries to extra-judicial execution--one can simply disappear or, now that it has become a transitive verb, can be disappeared--El Salvador, Chile under Pinochet, Iraq, the Philippines, the USSR, many others. Regimes that feature summary executions of suspected enemies of the state will almost always fail in most other categories of maintaining or expanding human rights. However, no matter how the concept of individual rights is trampled under the jackboots of fascism those rights still exist and individuals in these unfortunate countries are still fully entitled to them. The right to the presumption of innocence in a free and fair hearing before an independent and impartial judiciary doesn't evaporate in, for example, the People's Republic of China even though those rights may seem to be in permanent abeyance. An important distinction for Donnelly is that human rights are not moral rights--human rights have played what he calls a "vanishingly small part of Western moral theory." He follows John Rawls in identifying them as political rights and is much more specific regarding them than Jurgen Habermas whose political philosophy often complements Rawls but who is in conflict with him as well.Donnelly knows his stuff. He is cited everywhere by everyone, has been consulted by the United Nations and governments throughout the world. “Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice" is a valuable and timely book.

Text was received timely and in excellent condition.Met the expectations for an informative and comparative study. It also helped with insights for alternative ideas on creating positive changes in development aid. Thanks!

Used it as a textbook, but it was written in a way that tackles many of the basic questions that students may have about human rights as well as discussing the substantive schema within which human rights regimes operate.

I decided to try this book for an introductory course I'm teaching about human rights. This turned out to be a mistake. Donnelly presents the case for his own 'constructivist' account of human rights but doesn't do enough to give a fair account of alternative theories. As a result, this book isn't great as an introduction to the field. It might, I guess, be of interest to those who are already familiar with the human rights literature and so don't need to be exposed to a broader range of theories. Even so, because Donnelly doesn't engage sufficiently with opposing theoretical accounts (there are plenty from which to choose), his own conclusions are likely to strike those familiar with what else is on offer as too quick, and not particularly compelling.

#580,363 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

It was a wonderful quick read that left me wanting the next book! I have to admit that it had been a long time since I exercised my willing suspension of disbelief on any book that wasn't a reread I trusted. My usal go to books written by Orson Scott Card, Charles D'lint, or Isaac Asimov. Let's face it, I can be a hard sell sometimes. When I began the book I first thought uh oh this is going to be kiddy and underdeveloped (not that I'm any great literary critic), but as I continued to read I found myself absorbed into some really wonderful twists and turns in which the writer was able to transport me into the characters position and leave me there concerned and surprised. Concerned for the characters and surprised at my realization of how the book transported me into a new space which I could be surprised. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it, am looking forward to the next and thank the author Dima Zales for the entertaining story. ThanksThe Last Humans (3 Book Series)

I was disappointed with Oasis. I found the premise of the story a little tired (Star Trek had a similar theme for one episodes, as well as several other books and stories I have read and watched ... Logan's Run, Brave New World, 1984...), and the characters a bit out of sync with their given ages. Theo -- the main character -- and his "youth" group supposedly are in their twenties, but act like young teenagers, calling each other names and insulting each other. I know that one of the ideas was that aging was suppressed, but mentally, as well? I wasn't sure, but they all acted like it.I guessed the conclusion and the bad guys way too early on in the storyline, which took away from my enjoyment of the book.I agree with other reviewers that this should best be classified as a Young Adult novel. The story was interesting enough that I completed it, but I am not sure if I will purchase the followups.

The book was very boring to me. I can normally read a book and it sticks with me for a long time. After reading this I can remember the plot but not the characters names. To me this book was meh. It is something to read when your bored that you'd check out at the library not buy. I didn't get attached to any of the people. There was a plot but it was mainly boring no character development no real emotion from the characters. Not the worst book that I read but not a great one either.

I loved the thought reader trilogy. This book is nothing like that. It's much harder to get into. It took me ages to get into it and just read it.It's way different to most other sci fi. But it's different in a way that makes your head hurt trying to figure out where we're all going. You can see from the review that I decided I quite like it. Simple characters who grow into something more complex. A simple plot, the direction of which seems pretty obvious, that isn't.The ending is crafted to make you ask a bunch of questions. And, yes, I have bought the sequel to see if they're asked or answered.Need to go find out.If you choose this, have a nice read.

The story is a really original basis. I really enjoy following the story that Dima tells. The secondary characters are 2 dimensional, but that's not an issue here as the story follows 2 main characters. I like the premise that life on Earth as we know it has ended and that there's a colony of what's left. Where it goes from there is intriguing and keeps the reader engaged. Can't wait to read the next one.

I won't go into the basics of the story as others have done so in other reviews. I found this to be very engaging with enough plot twists to keep me reading right on through. There ARE enough clues scattered throughout the book to help you figure out the denouement and they are obvious -- once the story reaches the end. I am not sure if this is YA or for older readers, so I assume it's for both. Very well-written, with interesting characters and a very good sense of movement. I recommend this for both younger readers and everyone who really likes science fiction. I am now going straight to the second book!

It took me a few chapters to get into the story but after that I was hooked. I will definitely be reading on to find out where this story and it’s characters go. If anything, I felt the book was actually too short, and could’ve used a third act. Looking forward to seeing what kind of tale is delivered in the sequel.

It was an interesting book , quite different . The story was a bit confusing at first but I soon became attached to the main character and wanted to know what would happened to him . I will definitely buy book 2 of the series .
