I am an adult trying to teach myself how to play violin, as it is something I have always wanted to do, but I was never allowed to take lessons as a kid. So I bought this book hoping it would be a good place to start... but it is definitely written for children in a classroom setting. I was hoping for more how-to's, but most of that is relegated to side notes of "have your teacher show you..." but fortunately, there is Youtube, so I can deal with that. And that being said, it seems to have a decent selection of beginner scales and compositions to practice, the only thing disappointing there, is that for the first few pages they label all the notes (ie G, F#, A, etc) which is incredibly helpful for someone who hasn't attempted to read music ever, or at least in a long time, but this stops within the first few pages -- which is frustrating as it would be nice to have more practice getting the hang of the notes before having that little extra bit of aid dropped. It is also a very thin book... in the age of the internet, I kind of expected a bit more to make it worth the money vs simply printing all the information offline, which is absolutely the route I would have gone if I had easy access to a printer. So all things considered, this just gets a solid "okay" from me.

I've been a big fan of Essential Elements books. I've been studying with Hal Leonard since I was a kid. Aside from the useful information in the book, many of their books had audio CDs. This is nice for me, because I can't always understand music--even though I've learned to read it--unless I hear it. I understand basic notes, but the more complicated music baffles me in written form, so I do better playing by ear.When I decided to take up viola, I looked for Essential Elements. They don't do CDs anymore but online sites. BUT, I encountered something that initially was discouraging. This company assumes most of its users are enrolled in classes. I guess it is primarily used by music teachers. Though I had a student activation code, I needed a teacher to register me on the site first. The problem is, I am self-study...so initially it looked like I wouldn't have access to the web site. I did find another web address in the back of the book that had the lessons for the book but lacked some of the bells and whistles of their main site. The main site has the ability to record and has other helpful features. Their secondary site is just a library.However, I contacted the company, and they set up an account for me--so now I have access to the main site. If you are self-study like me, you will have to contact them--but they are very nice about it. If you are under thirteen, your parents will need to do it. Otherwise, they just need to know what instrument you are playing and that you are over thirteen years of age.

This has been an excellent product to purchase for an adult beginner violinist. I am really happy with this. I have been practicing for only 2 weeks now and I am learning very quickly and am more than half way through this book. I enjoyed Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 so much that I decided that I need Book 2 and Book 3, and they will be arriving in the next few days. This is an excellent book for learning the violin. It really helps.

Fantastic book to learn the violin--for those (of us) who've never even touched a violin! This books gets started at the “basics”—learning notes by plucking (pizzicato) first and then bowing. I love the fact that the buyers of this book have on-line access to background music to play-along with (beginning violin karaoke!)—it feels great to be part of a “band”! The only thing missing is a “how-to” on how each song should “sound” when played (music theory). Problem solved—I went to YouTube, and Patrick Murphy (PhD) plays each song in this book, which has been a HUGE help in learning the timing and mechanics of each song. I am also taking violin lessons, and my teacher is using this book. This book, access to the background music, and YouTube has helped reinforce the lessons in this book—and I am really enjoying learning the violin!

The online stuff looks like it would be great, but I was unable to use it. I take private lessons, so I am not in a class. I bought the teachers manual to give to my teacher. Hopefully, I will be able to use it after he sets an account up. What good is buying a book with an online interactive account, if you can't access the account?

My son is 10 years old. He just began viola lessons and has never played an insturment before. I do not sit in on his lessons with him however sometimes during the week he has questions. I am able to look thru his book and help him with the easy to follow instructions on finger placement, descriptions on what the different notations are within the music, etc.I appreciate that this book has songs he recognizes, such as Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star". The fact that he already knows the melody helps him to hear when his finger is slightly misplaced and he is able to make the adjustment himself. I think that's one of the biggest battles for him as a beginning viola student, so these familiar songs are a great feature to this book. I'm glad his music teacher suggested we purchase it for his lessons!

Ha, see what I did there with the headline, anyways when I was learning the sax in middle school we had these books so when I bought my violin I knew this would be very important to help me learn. I gotta say I'm very happy with what I got for such a (what I consider at least) low price. There were essentially no marks on the book and it definitely makes learning my new violin much easier. Especially without a tutor. The instructions and songs you learn are easy to understand and not as humiliating as say Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (although honestly that song is in the book too, but there are many other songs so you could even skip some). The book has little review type practices. Like writing in what certain notes are after you've learned them to help you remember. All in all a good buy worth the money.

Adding servers, client PC's and users, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and a host of other tutorials. How to configure a virtual lab all by itself was worth the price of admission.

I'm a Systems Administrator focusing mainly on virtualization and storage. I bought this book to brush up on my knowledge of Windows Server 2012 R2, and I found the exercises helpful. I leaned a few things that I didn't know before, which easily justifies the $2.99 price tag. However, I'm giving this review only 4 stars for two specific reasons.1. While there were many screenshots accompanying the exercises, they were too small to read clearly on my Kindle Fire HD.2. The exercises were just that - exercises. There was no explanation at all of the concepts behind the exercises. Even for $2.99 I would expect at least a brief explanation of what was being taught.Lastly I'd like to note that I departed from the instructions in two important ways. The book has you set up vitual machines using VMware Workstation. However, I'm a long-time Virtualbox user, so I used that instead, and I had no problems. As long as you know how to take snapshots and revert to them, you should be fine using whatever virtualization software you're comfortable with. Secondly, one of the VM's you build is a client machine running Windows 8.1. I didn't have a copy of that handy, so I used Windows 10 instead. Everything worked fine.Overall it's a handy book if you want a very brief overview of some of the common administration tasks in Windows Server 2012.

Though this guide, like many of the books, does not go into tremendous depth with its practice exercises, it does have many useful exercises and is helpful for generally covering many of the 70-410 exam topics, which was my purpose for using it. Additional study material would be necessary in order to pass the exam, but given that understanding, I thought this guide was mostly helpful.

Although there are more than a few typos, the book was extremely useful. One important note: the setup assumes the usage of VMware Player in the beginning, and assumes the use of the Snapshot feature; but with the version of VMware Player 12, the Snapshot feature no longer exists. I overcame this by simply shutting down all VMs after creation and backing them up to a 'Revert' subdirectory, then copying these back every time the book said to revert to the previous snapshot. Also, Exercise 12 (Installing and Configuring Disk Storage) is written as if the VMs were created under Hyper-V, which is counter to the VM setup instructions. Although it's a good read, Exercise 12 cannot be performed as written.Despite this, I found this book VERY useful.

As others have mentioned sometimes the writing and explanation aren't very clear. However I found the exercises in the book to be very helpful, although I didn't find solutions in the textbook and had to look them up online. I'll have more to say once i get my midterm back

NOT a well-written book at all. The authors clearly know their material well, but fail to explain it in an understandable manner. If this is your class textbook, don’t miss a single lecture, cause this is not going to help you understand anything.

The textbook comes complete with great online supplemental information, but that doesn't make it a great textbook. I've found that the material is often not explained thoroughly enough. Also, some of the exercises expect you to know about concepts that are not covered adequately in the text (for example, there are questions on 2NF, and there is no more than a couple sentences on the subject). The material as a whole is not explained very clearly, and the chapters on the lower-level subject material (systems) are not quite up to par.I suppose the reason I was a bit disappointed is because this is such an important subject, and I was hoping for a real keeper. This book is decent, but definitely not great.

Page 617/618 is missing!It is hard to find unless you do read the book.

I appreciate that the kindle version of this book exists as it makes it exceedingly convenient to bring the book to work, to school, restaurants, etc; but the book is full of equations. The equations were converted to images of such low quality I'm left wondering if they printed out the book, scanned the images in on a fax machine and pasted them into the document in MS Word 2003. Some of the equations literally have a fuzzy gray pixelated background. Heh.The diagrams in the book are of such a startlingly low quality they're totally illegible. Plan on buying the print edition of this book along with the kindle version. You'll need it to decipher the diagrams. They look alright in the page, but of course the font is too small to read. The problem is that zooming in doesn't help, since it was (as previously mentioned) faxed over from one building to another.This conversion is shameful.Shame.I'd hate to discourage publishers from making Kindle copies though. I'd buy it again, I'm just embarrassed for them regarding this conversion.

This text was supposed to be my primary reference source, in lieu of a poor DBMS teacher. I quickly found that YouTube lectures, including those by Dr. Boetticher (sp) at University of Houston were MUCH more helpful at explaining hashing, B+ trees, ER diagrams, and other concepts. The book is too wordy and hard to follow. Each chapter has 1 or 2 examples that are not very clear. The end-of-chapter problems have issues. Overall, a poor book.

I really liked this book. It explained database management systems very well, and wasn't too boring to read either! I also really like how they use pretty much the same database example throughout the book. That makes it much faster and easier to read.

The book I needed for school at a super price. Five stars.
