We have a son who learns visually. He struggles with reading comprehension and so graphic novels are his book of choice. He is fortunate to have a high school English teacher who lets him read the graphic novels instead of just reading text. He absolutely loved Frankenstein. This graphic novel follows the book well enough and the pictures are terrific. His teacher allowed him to use the graphic novel as reference for his paper as well. I am so grateful to find classic novels done in graphic form. It has been a life changer for our son's school experiences.
Fantastic! A familiar story made even better by the spectacular illustrations. I was afraid the pictures might "distract" from the story, but they only aided my reading of the original text. Highly recommend this "version" and it's relating the story of Victor Frankenstein and the monster he created, shamefully without reckoning upon God. Completely soulless, the "monster" turns on it's creator, as expected. Don't bother looking for the old movie versions, as this original story is far more compelling. Enjoy this, but look for more when you're done.
I have never read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". I have seen several Frankenstein movies. This graphic novel is as good, if not better than the best film version that I've seen("Mary Shelley's Frankenstein").I have been interested in classic literature and graphic novels since I was a teen. So, when I saw that a company named Classical Comics was making literary classics into graphic novels, I was ecstatic! I own several graphic novel adaptations of classic works of literature. Not all of them are from Classical Comics; some of them are from Marvel. But "Frankenstein" is the first one I purchased from Classical Comics. And I wasn't disappointed. This book has everything you could want in a graphic novel. It has excellent writing(much of which is taken directly from the original prose novel, which makes you feel like you're reading the original work, adding to the older gothic feel of the story instead of coming off as some modern reimagining). The artwork is top-notch, capturing the mood of the story brilliantly. And the story itself is both very entertaining and full of themes that force you to think about the human condition. The idea and feeling of acceptance is one of the themes that is most powerful, in my opinion. All in all, if you are a fan of classic literature, gothic horror/romanticism, graphic novels, or all three - you should check this one out. And check out the other classic literature graphic novel adaptations that are out there. There are some really great reads. Classical Comics' "A Christmas Carol" is excellent. And Marvel has a line of classic works, such as the "Oz" series of books by L. Frank Baum, and "Pride and Prejudice" just to name a few. Also I have to add here that Marvel also has an adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that has to be the best graphic novel adaptation of that story ever done. It's the only adaptation I've ever read, but I've read the original prose novel and Marvel's version is so faithful to it that I am skeptical that any other graphic novel could do a better job. Although, Classical Comics is releasing their version of "Dracula" in February of 2012. So I will definitely be getting that, and may then have to eat my words. We'll see. This is a great introduction to classic literature. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It's money well spent.
i bought 5 or 6 of these so i will only review one.Grandsons 10 & 13 visited for a month last summer and actuall read all these graphic classics And took them home,Some of the graphics with Dracula and Frankenstein were bloody and gross and they loved them.Hense the word "graphic"And we could actually discuss them with tv turned off and no phones. So much more interesting than the old cliff notes
Great book. This version is so exciting. My daughter need it for her literature class and totally loved it. She now has taken a much deeper interest in reading, since venturing through thus book.
I am studying "Frankenstein" in a college Eng 1B class and our final paper is based on the book worth 30% of our grade. The importance of the material makes me want to reread the book but as I'm in a time crunch I cannot. I ordered this book and it has all the characters, no absences of scenes or absent plot points so this is great for the analytical approach I'm taking. We have to explicate the paper and I can use this book to pinpoint the pages in the book and find the quotes I will use. Plus this book has some extra small essays in the back that are of use in my thesis and outline. I would say this book also has the best artwork and translation of the three I bought from Amazon. This is a valuable addition to my studies and I recommend it to any person that needs a condensed version of the story. You can just look through the pages quickly and find the section from the pictures instead of reading anything. A great read for serious critical thinkers.
Great book for the HS classroom.
