Review

"This book thoughtfully explores race, gender, and much more, while delivering a story that you won't be able to put down."--Bustle"This book is a clear descendent of Octavia Butler's Black science fiction legacy, but grounded in more explicit queerness and neuroatypicality."--AutoStraddle"This is a dark book in which the characters are treated brutally, but also a powerful one. For me, the nuances of how Aster's peers deal with mental illness, neurodivergence, and trauma are especially fascinating."--Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi& Fantasy Blog"An Unkindness of Ghosts is a debut of a powerful new voice in science fiction, and a must-read for fans of Ursula Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin, Octavia Butler, and Margaret Atwood."--BookRiot, Included in 8 Great Reads to Get Into Afrofuturism"With an Afrofuturist premise grounded in a queer neuroatypical worldview, An Unkindness of Ghosts is the post-Butler novel many of us have been waiting for."--Strange Horizons"My recommendation for today is to check out An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon, which made all kinds of sci-fi and fantasy 'best' lists of last year. It's about a stratified society aboard a spacecraft, and it is intensely thought-provoking."--LeVar Burton Reads (podcast)"Because the unjust society of the generation ship Matilda--divided by race, class, and religion--is deeply detailed, and uncomfortably close to home."--Barnes & Noble"Solomon's evocation of this society is so sharply detailed and viscerally realized, the characters so closely observed, the individual scenes so tightly structured, that the novel achieves surprising power and occasional brilliance...Aster [is] one of the more memorable characters in recent SF, and it's enough, in the end, to make An Unkindness of Ghosts among the most provocative and fiercely passionate of recent generation starship tales, and Solomon among the most distinctive new voices to emerge this year."--Locus"Solomon's big, unflinching and poetically detailed sci-fi debut tells the story of Aster Grey, an orphan raised on the slavery deck of a starship called the HSS Matilda as she searches for answers to her mother's death and the mystery of the forces who control the starship. Aster is both neuroatypical and queer, and these elements of her characterization work seamlessly and nonexploitatively into a plot that mirrors so many of our own world's greatest injustices, probing at our ideas about classism, racism, abuse and tyranny. A stunning first novel by a writer I can't wait to see more from."--Them, included in 10 Books That Stole Our Queer Hearts in 2017Included in a roundup of the Reading Women Podcast, Must-Read Fantasy Novels by Women"This striking debut novel, set aboard a generation ship where white supremacists enslave black laborers, combines sharp allegory with poetic metaphor. Aster Grey, a literal-minded medic, hopes to undermine the ruling Sovereignty with the help of notes left by her mother, but decoding them is an almost impossible challenge. Solomon addresses numerous daunting topics with incision and insight in this stunning achievement."--Publishers Weekly, Best Book of the Year, Science Fiction/Fantasy"Harrowing and beautiful, this is SF at its best: showing the possible future but warning of the danger of bringing old prejudices and cruelties to that new world. While a story about enslaved people in space could be a one-note polemic, the fully rounded characters bring nuance and genuine pathos to this amazing debut."--Library Journal, Starred Review"Aster was born on the lower decks of the USS Matilda, a space vessel searching for a habitable planet after an ecological disaster on Earth. Only Aster grasps the means of melding science, tradition, and spirituality to heal from generational trauma so the ship can return safely."--Library Journal, from a February 2019 feature on Afrofuturism"Solomon's distyopian fantasy stars quietly rebellious Aster, whose family has lived for generations in the hold of the creaky HSS Matilda, putatively carrying the last of humanity to a Promised Land."--Library Journal, Included in Barbara Hoffert's Debut Novels spotlight"Solomon debuts with a raw distillation of slavery, feudalism, prison, and religion that kicks like rotgut moonshine...Stunning."--Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"Infused with the spirit of Octavia Butler and loaded with meaning for the present day, An Unkindness of Ghosts will appeal to a wide variety of readers. Solomon's impassioned, speculative, literary book is sorely needed on library shelves."--Booklist"Rivers Solomon is a bold new voice in speculative fiction. This startling debut delves into issues of class, race and gender on a futuristic spaceship whose society mimics the antebellum American South...Though shaped like the past transported into the future, Solomon's narrative seethes with underpinnings of the present carried to the extreme, a police state where women have lost reproductive rights and people of color face servitude and constant brutality. Complex and prophetic, An Unkindness of Ghosts will have readers cheering Aster as she fights for her freedom."--Shelf Awareness"With An Unkindness of Ghosts, Rivers Solomon inarguably shows themselves to be a literary child of genre leader Octavia E. Butler...Suffused with the past, the present, and the future of human experiences in its events, An Unkindness of Ghosts launches the career of a brilliantly gifted and important new writer in science fiction."--Foreword Reviews, Starred Review"The HSS Matilda is a well-crafted world, and...the diversity of the people who inhabit it--their various sexual and gender identities, physical abilities, and psychological burdens--is refreshingly visible and vital even as they face brutal discrimination for their differences. An entertaining novel that does not neglect the vitality of its story while probing society’s assumptions."--Kirkus Reviews"The HSS Matilda is a generation ship organized much like the antebellum South. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer and sowing the seeds of civil war, sharecropper Aster learns there may be a way off the ship if she's willing to fight for it."--Publishers Weekly; included in Fall 2017 Adult Announcements, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror"A Generation Ship story like no other...Remarkable."--Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog"Transposing the cruelties of a Southern plantation to outer space, this book was the best debut I read this year. The white people on the massive spaceship Matilda's upper decks live in luxury and keep the black people on the lower decks enslaved. Aster is black, neuroatypical, ambiguously gendered according to her society's mores, and an orphan of the lower decks. While an outsider in her social groups, she is also a medical genius, and with the support and friendship of a light-skinned surgeon from the upper decks, she navigates Matilda's horrors to bring succour and healing where she can."--NPR, Book Concierge Best Books of 2017"In Rivers Solomon's An Unkindness of Ghosts, a generation starship has left the ruined Earth behind: the senior crew are all white supremacists, while dark-skinned people are kept below decks as slave labor. In this unflinching debut Solomon invites comparisons with Octavia Butler."--The Guardian, Best Book of the Year / Science Fiction and Fantasy"Solomon's strong characters, led by Aster herself, make this a deeply affecting tale that is far more than a simple allegory of injustice."--Chicago Tribune"Rivers Solomon's debut makes for a stellar gift for readers looking for an intensely thoughtful meditation on race, class, and humanity's future."--Bookish, Best Books to Give in 2017"This debut novel will absolutely take your breath away."--Bustle, Best Fiction Books of 2017"Here is a novel that puts non-binary and multiracial identities at the forefront of a violent future we may all too easily recognize today...Solomon's fascinating and deeply realized novel joins the imaginative ranks of Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson, each of whom carved out unique places in the largely white male world of sci-fi as black women writers. Solomon, who is non-binary, enters the world of sci-fi with their own revolutionary debut, which should appeal to avid and first-time sci-fi readers alike."--Literary Hub, Included in "15 Books You Should Read This October""In this debut, Rivers Solomon transports readers to a spaceship bound for a new world but very much trapped in the past. When the Earth began to die, humans decided to flee. It's been over 300 years since the original group boarded the HSS Matilda, and in that time a white-supremacist cult known as the Sovereignty has seized power. Aster Grey was born on the ship and into slavery, but a new discovery leads her to believe that she might be able to break free."--Bookish, Included in "Best Book Club Picks for October 2017""A debut work of speculative fiction features a spaceship with a white supremacist cult at the helm, making a generations-long trip to a new world via the labor of a group of enslaved black people living belowdeck."--The Millions, Included in "October Preview: The Millions Most Anticipated List""An Unkindness of Ghosts brings the burden of our history to an imagined future and makes us bear the weight. A speculative page-turner, Afrofuturist dystopica, slave (spaceship) narrative, reconciling character study, queer noir, and more--this novel achieves an otherwordly wonder that's all too painfully of this world."--Community of Literary Magazines and Presses, citation for 2018 Firecracker Award for Fiction"A truly extraordinary and compelling read from cover to cover, An Unkindness of Ghosts showcases author Rivers Solomon's impressive flair for originality and master of the science fiction genre. A simply riveting read from cover to cover, An Unkindness of Ghosts is a 'must' for the personal reading lists of dedicated science fiction fans."--Midwest Book Review"For people who are tempted to dismiss science fiction as one-dimensional or superficial, An Unkindness of Ghosts digs deep into issues of race, class, gender and human connection."--The Thread (Minnesota Public Read Newsletter), a Must-Read"An excellent science fiction novel and debut by Rivers Solomon, An Unkindness of Ghosts is able to touch on today's racial issues by dipping into the past to create a story set in the future without sounding like it's a lecture on morality."--San Francisco Book Review"Solomon's writing is so absorbing, her eye for detail in every aspect of her storytelling so keen that it would take way too much time explaining everything impressive about it. It's in the little observant touches, such as each deck having its own dialet, even its own language, that the world building achieves a criterion of realism. And by all means, give me a broken, flawed, angry, often aggressively unlikable but still brave and committed protagonist...The ultimate peace [Aster] works her way towards is that much sweeter because of everything she wasn't afraid to fight to get there."--SFF180"Solomon's exploration of a futuristic yet all too familiarly repressive society is highly recommended for anyone interested in the ever-growing field of SF which is invested in engaging with race, gender, and sexuality as an integral part of any vision of the future."--IndiePicks Magazine"The sci-fi debut by Rivers Solomon takes place aboard a spaceship named Matilda, and features a teased and taunted main character named Aster, described as 'odd-mannered, obsessive, withdrawn,' who is on a mission to discover the potential connection between the deaths of her mother and the Matilda's potentate."--Bay Area Reporter"Slavery, racial segregation, and resistance, all set in outer space."--Nylon"What Solomon does brilliantly in this novel is in the creation of a society in which dichotomies loom over certain aspects of the narrative, and are eschewed by others...Hearkening back to the past in visions of the future can hold a number of narrative purposes...The past offers us countless nightmares and cautionary tales; so too, I'm afraid, can the array of possible futures lurking up ahead."--Tor.com"This hard sci-fi novel that parallels our history in post-Civil War America, but is set aboard a spaceship. The Earth can no longer support life, and survivors fled aboard a spaceship. That ship, the Matilda, is now a colony, and segregation is a way of life. Anyone with dark skin is a laborer, while those with light skin are upper class. From what I've heard about this book, it's hard to read, but I think it's an important story that needs to be told."--SyFy Wire"Rivers Solomon uses the generation ship setting to craft a challenging narrative of inescapable racial prejudice. In an explicit rejection of sci-fi's typical futurism, Solomon transposes the antebellum plantation system on to her novel's setting, the spaceship Matilda."--New Scientist"A powerful story...An Unkindness of Ghosts is the novel every queer geek of color (and ally) has been waiting for."--Black Girl Nerds"Amazing, heartbreaking, yet it still gave me the hope that some good people will be able to endure and survive no matter what...A favorite for me."--Monlatable Book Reviews"This book may technically be science fiction, but like all good sci-fi/dystopian stories, it draws its themes from our world: slavery, oppression, classism, gender, and sexuality...If you're at all a fan of sci-fi or dystopian stories, you must read this book. Solomon is a seriously unique voice and this is a masterful debut novel. I can't wait to see what they write next...5 stars."--Chelsea's Bookshelf"Rivers Solomon's debut, An Unkindness of Ghosts, reworks the generation ship in a way that feels almost miraculous, putting slavery in space to remind us that no act of dehumanisation can truly extinguish the human spirit."--Strange Horizons"Through this debut, Solomon proves themself a bold and unapologetic bringer of truth and knowledge, a forbearer of wondrous new possibilities in speculative black fiction...If I need to say it plainly, I will do so now: buy this book. Let it fill you with its vengeful ghosts and hollowed out living humans. Let it hurt you and try to break you and then, when you are spent, let it lift you up and carry you forward. Let it guide you home."--Women Write About Comics"Fans of Octavia Butler and China Miéville--both socially aware and critical science fiction writers--will adore this debut, as will any reader eager for a blending of genres and story."--Read It Forward"I am so thrilled about An Unkindness of Ghosts, because Aster is the powerful sci-fi lady that I've been waiting for...An Unkindness of Ghosts is a science fiction book that deserves to be on 'must read' lists for feminism in sci-fi."--Hedgehog Book Reviews (blog)"Amazing, hopeful, strikingly incisive. It brought me back to my feelings ranging from quiet grief to breathtaking rage. It was one of the high points of literature...It was brilliant, and it spoke for me."--Bogi Reads the World (blog)"This book contains the best disability representation I have ever read in fiction...Check out this book to read a desperately necessary story featuring intersectional characters, respectfully depicted. You won't regret it."--Tonia Says (blog)"Hands down one of the best science fiction novels I've read."--The Illustrated Page (blog)"Sci-Fi worthy of Octavia Butler...An Unkindness of Ghosts is a fascinating study of our own society and an exciting new work of science fiction. Solomon has created an intense, brutal world within the walls of the Matilda."--Mom Read It (blog)"Rivers Solomon pulls you through a difficult journey that is shockingly real, while being utterly engaging as science fiction...It's refreshing to read a new writer who can manipulate such well known motifs, while churning out a story that still instigates a contemporary discourse, one that dares to remind the reader that the past doesn't always stay buried."--Geeks OUT"An Unkindness of Ghosts absolutely blew me away...A must read on so many different levels and needs to be on your reading list."--Utopia State of Mind (blog)"Incredible...It is what I wish every book could be: an exploration of the best and worst parts of society in a literary setting."--Red Hen Book Shop's Talk & Peck Blog"A stunning debut novel of a colony ship traversing space...I hungered for this and it was done amazingly."--Bogi Reads the World (blog), included in Hugo & Nebula Award recommendations"Thanks to the more-than-a-few brilliant moments scattered throughout the book, the captivating (and important) metaphor at its core, and the natural depiction of diverse characters, I'd recommend An Unkindness of Ghosts, and I especially look forward to what Solomon does next based on such an ambitious first book."--Fantasy Literature"An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon is a fantastic science fiction novel. It never stumbles into the pitfalls other debut novels too often do. This is one of the best sci-fi novels involving generation ships I've ever read, and I cannot wait to see what else Rivers Solomon has in store for us."--Looking Glass Reads (blog)"Solomon's masterful debut...is a powerful story about oppression, racism, gender non-comformity, and the role of trauma in society and peoples' lives."--New Books Network"Immediately immersive and sophisticated...This is a phenomenal piece of work."--Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series"An Unkindness of Ghosts marks the debut of a wildly talented writer. Rivers Solomon has put together a heady science-fiction novel that speaks directly to some of the most pressing political and social concerns of the modern day. And yet for all that it remains deeply humane, and it's even quite funny at times. This is a book you'll want to read now so you can tell your friends you read it first."--Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling"Welcome to the Tarlands aboard the space vessel HSS Matilda--home of the poor and rejected--and the setting of Rivers Solomon’s powerful debut novel. Imaginative in the vein of Colson Whitehead, Samuel R. Delany, and Octavia E. Butler, this novel explores the struggles of slum dwellers aboard a spacecraft sadly reminiscent of our own world: rife with poverty, caste, and discrimination as told through the Looking Glass. With outstanding world-building and an unforgettable protagonist in Aster, An Unkindness of Ghosts is a notable debut by an author whose work I look forward to reading for years to come.”--Tananarive Due, author of The Living Blood and Ghost Summer

An Unkindness of Ghost is everything I hope for in science fiction. Solomon thoughtfully creates a world in which they explore issues of sexual identity, race, class, and historical trauma. At a time when the world seems to be crumbling on all sides I found myself drawing strength from Aster and Giselle who are driven to challenge official narratives and seek change. I recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction or wants a new and challenging approach to thinking about social justice.

This is probably one of my favorite books I've read in the last year. An interesting and thoughtful take on not just the functioning scientifically, but socially, of a generation ship, and an in-depth treatment of race and discrimination in a genre that often hand-waves our species' history of it away. This is one of the first science fiction books in a long time where I saw myself in the protagonist. I was told going in that there were queer characters and that the main characters were black, but I was pleasantly surprised by a recognizably autistic protagonist. Often when people write about characters with difficulty recognizing their emotions, it feels false to me, but this felt very familiar to me.An Unkindness of Ghosts is interesting, and emotional, and clever, and although it's a hard read (the ship is basically Plantations In Space and Rivers Solomon does not shy away from the horrible aspects of that) it is very much worth it. It's satisfying and rewarding, even if it's not comfortable.

I struggled between a 3 and a 4 star rating. Aster, the main protagonist, is a character I would enjoy reading again. The idea of a generation ship roaming the galaxy without a sure destination as the set up for a plantation narrative drives home the hopelessness and claustrophobia of slavery/ethnic caste systems. The reasons I ultimately settled with a 3 star rating are as follows:P.O.V. switches: several times we move into the P.O.V. of other characters. Solomon writes these characters' voices well, but I felt like the switch in P.O.V. allowed an unwelcomed reprieve from Aster's conflicts.Temporal shifts: along with the change in P.O.V. there were flashbacks(?) to a younger Aster with a younger Giselle, but the transition into the flashback didn't signal to me I was in the past, so I spent several moments wondering what happened to the almost-detective story I was reading.I would recommend this to folks who like a hard sci-fi backdrop for their dystopian narratives. I would also recommend this to folka interested in a diverse cast, or want a narrative which doesn't shirk away from the horror of race-based caste systems which are perpetuated across human civilization.

A compelling debut. Speculative fiction with a literary, feminist edge, set in the distant future aboard a spacecraft tumbling, unmoored (physically and spiritually) through space. It's a stratified, segregated world on this space ship, ruled by a Sovereign with absolute power and cruelty. The story, however, is Astrid's --a Low worker, black-skinned, who is also a healer, the favorite of the Chief Surgeon, The. Astrid is, a powerful female character in a novel in which almost all the women characters, even Astrid's lost mother, Luna, are strong and strongly told. However, it is Theo I found most intriguing: devout, marked as effeminate by the Sovereign, with a secret past, yearning to do good, especially by Astrid but full of fear. I must admit: the middle of the novel plodded along, but Astrid's vivid remembrances of folk tales about animals, the Raven, stand out, and the story carried me through to the riveting, explosive end of this novel. Kudos! I look forward to reading more from Rivers Solomon.

As I age, it's more and more rare that a book so enraptures me so completely that I tear through it in a single sitting. An Unkindness of Ghosts is one of these rarities. The narrative feels fresh, and the characters are just breath-taking. There are no one-dimensional characters written here, and getting to know these characters is reason enough to read the book. Once you do read it, you'll find many others. As a scientist, I love all of the women of color scientists that I too rarely get to see in media. The story unabashedly confronts the brutality, trauma, and abuse humanity is capable of, in particular that white folks have proven ourselves to be capable of throughout history. The characters are irreparably marked by this oppressive brutality in a variety of ways while still managing to collaboratively cobble together moments of joy, revenge, and fulfillment. If you're looking for sci-fi with a fresh perspective or for an impeccably written narrative with impossibly compelling characters, pick this up.

My dear fellow readers: I’ve read quite a few books this year (as have we all), many of which I truly loved. But I have to say that this one is beyond question, my most favorite book of 2017.It is one of those rare finds that pulls you in—body and soul—after a mere page or two. Aster was magnificent as the protagonist. Such an odd character, but one I couldn’t help but love. The story takes place on a giant spaceship, one that’s been traveling for about 1,000 years. Solomon brilliantly used this ship as a microcosm for greater society. She expertly spoke volumes about human nature, gender, the stratification of people by economic status.

Book Description

How is this history of philosophy different from all others? 1.  It’s neither very long (like Copleston’s twelve-volume tome, which is a clear   and helpful reference work but pretty dull reading) nor very short (like many   skimpy one-volume summaries) but just long enough.  2. It’s available in separate volumes but eventually in one complete work (after the   four volumes – Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Contemporary – are produced in   paperbound editions, a one-volume clothbound will be published).  3.  It focuses on the “big ideas” that have influenced present people and present   times. 4. It includes relevant biographical data, proportionate to its importance for each   thinker. 5.  It is not just history but philosophy. Its aim is not merely to record facts (of life   or opinion) but to stimulate philosophizing, controversy, argument. 6.  It does this by aiming above all at understanding, at what the old logic called   the “first act of the mind” rather than the third: the thing computers and many   “analytic philosophers” cannot understand. 7.  It uses ordinary language and logic, not professional academic jargon or   symbolic logic. 8.  It is commonsensical (and therefore is sympathetic to commonsense   philosophers like Aristotle). 9.  It is “existential” in that it sees philosophy as something to be lived, and tested   in life. It concentrates on the questions that make a difference to your life. 10.  It dares to be human and, therefore, occasionally funny or ironic. 11.  Like the “Great Books,” it assumes that philosophy is not about philosophy but   about reality; about wisdom; about life and death and good and evil and man   and God and “stuff like that,” rather than mere analysis of language. It cooks   edible meats rather than just sweeping the floor of garbage. 12.  It tries to be simple and direct and clear in showing how deep and dark and   mysterious the questions of philosophy are. It combines clarity with profundity,   as neither “analytic” nor “continental” philosophy yet does (though they’re   both trying). 13.  It sees the history of human thought as more exciting, more dramatic, than   military or political history. Its running thread is “the great conversation.” It lets   philosophers talk to each other. 14.  It takes the past seriously. It does not practice “chronological snobbery.” Our   ancestors made mistakes. So do we. We can see ours best by reading them. 15.  It will stay in print forever or till the Cubs win the World Series and the world   ends. 16.  It gives more space (16–20 pages) to the 10 most important philosophers,   medium space (5–15 pages) to the next 20, and only a little space (2–4 pages) to   the other 70. 17.  It’s not “dumbed down.” It doesn’t patronize. 18.  It can be understood by beginners. It’s not just for scholars. 19.  It’s usable for college classes or by do-it-yourselfers. 20.  It takes every philosopher serious, but it’s not relativistic. It argues (usually   both pro and con), because it believes in Truth. 21.  It does not deliver platitudes. It emphasizes surprises. For “philosophy begins   in wonder.” 22.  It includes visual aids: charts, cartoons, line drawings, and each philosopher’s   face. 23.  It gives not just the what but the why: why each philosopher asked the   questions he did, and the rationale for the answer he gave. 24.  It includes many memorable and famous quotations, in boldface type. 25.  It prepares readers for reading the philosophers themselves, by warning them   what to expect.

I like this book though professor Kreeft makes short work of the subject of ancient philosophy (and the rise of ancient religions, too, for that matter). It is an enjoyable read, however, if you want a birds-eye overview of the subject to gain the "lay of the land," so to speak. I recommend this book to those of you who are new to philosophy or who have never been on the journey of studying the history of philosophy. As an added bonus Dr. Kreeft often interjects some humor into his topics to help keep the subject a bit more lighthearted.

Peter Kreeft has written what is probably the best introduction to ancient western philosophy for college students. Socrates’ Children Ancient is simply outstandingly good. Peter Kreeft is a philosophy professor at Boston College who has taught philosophy to college students for more than 50 years, so he knows the material.Kreeft wrote about what is distinctive about his book, listing 32 features, and what he wrote was true. So here is what he said, followed by my comments in brackets:Why this book? I decided to write this book after several people asked me to recommend just one book that covers the whole history of philosophy that beginners can understand and even get excited about. Here are the 32 features that make this book distinct:1. It is “existential,” practical, and personal. Philosophy is about human life and thought, so I concentrated on ideas that make a difference to our lives. That is William James’ “pragmatic criterion of truth.” (I think he really meant ‘importance’ rather than ‘truth.’) His point is that if you can’t specify what difference it makes if you believe or disbelieve an idea, then that idea is neither true nor false in any humanly significant sense.2. It is selective. It doesn’t try to cover too much. It is aimed at beginners. Little philosophers get only a page or two, great philosophers get only a dozen, and medium-sized philosophers get between 3 and 6 pages.3. It concentrates on “the Big Ideas.” This involves minimizing or omitting many “smaller” ideas. I think it is true of ideas, as of friends, that you can have too many of them. Better to have a few that are deeply understood and cherished than to have many that are not. This book includes only what most students will find valuable. They will find valuable only what they remember years later. They will remember years later only those ideas that make a difference to their lives. And that’s usually one Big Idea from each philosopher.4. It covers 100 philosophers. I chose them by two standards: (a) intrinsic excellence, wisdom and importance, and (b) extrinsic historical influence and fame.5. It gives much more space to the ‘big nine’: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Hume, Kant and Hegel. These are the most influential philosophers of all time.6. It presents the history of philosophy as a story, a “great conversation.” Philosophers can best be understood historically, as engaging in a dialog with other philosophers. The whole history of Western philosophy is a very long and complex Socratic dialog.7. On the other hand, its point of view is not historical relativism. I do not try to explain away any philosophers by reducing them to creatures of their times, as Marxists and Hegelians do.8. It is for beginners, not scholars. It does not break new ground in content.9. It is not “dumbed down” even though it is for beginners, for it is for intelligent beginners, not dumb beginners. (It is also appropriate for intelligent high school seniors and for graduate students in other departments than philosophy.)10. It is for college courses in the history of philosophy. But it is also a “do-it-yourself” book which does not require a teacher to interpret it.11. Its point of view is traditional rather than fashionable. It neither assumes nor tries to prove any one particular philosophical position. Though I try to be fair to all philosophers and get “into their heads”, I confess at the outset a sympathy for common sense. In philosophical terms, this usually (but not always) means, in one word, Aristotle rather than Nietzsche, Marx or Derrida.12. It tries to be both clear and profound, both logical and existential. The idea is to imitate Socrates, who was both clear and profound.13. Like Socrates, it takes logic seriously. Therefore it summarizes not just conclusions but arguments, and evaluates them logically. But it uses ordinary-language logic, common-sense logic, Socratic logic, rather than the artificial language of modern mathematical, symbolic logic.14. It uses three kinds of logic, as Socrates did: It uses inductive logic by grounding and testing its abstract and general ideas in concrete and particular instances. It uses deductive logic in tracing practices back to their principles and principles back to their premises, and in following premises, principles and practices out to their logical conclusions. And it uses seductive logic as a woman would seduce a man by her beauty. For philosophy can be very beautiful.15. Many of the questions philosophers ask are also questions religion claims to answer, though the methods of these two enterprises are fundamentally different: philosophy uses human reason alone while religion relies on faith in something that is more than human. Therefore this book naturally interfaces with religion in its questions, but not in its methods. Neither religious belief nor unbelief is either presupposed or aimed at.16. This book seeks truth. Much of contemporary philosophy is concerned with persuading people of something, regardless of whether or not it is true. But real philosophy seeks truth, and it is not just a display of cleverness.17. It emphasizes the classical philosophers for two reasons: First, we don’t yet know which contemporary philosophes will be acknowledged as great and which will be forgotten. It takes time for history to judge philosophers correctly. And secondly, contemporary philosophers often ask theoretical questions of little practical importance. Real people ask questions like: What are we? What should we be? Why were we born? Why must we suffer? Why must we die? Why do we kill? How should we live? Is there a God? Is there an afterlife? Where does morality come from? What is the greatest good? How do you know?18. It is full of surprises. It emphasizes things readers do not already know, understand or believe. It does not patronizingly pass off clichés as profundities. It emphasizes wonder, since philosophy begins in wonder. This does not contradict its preference for common sense, for common sense, when explored, turns out to be more wonderful than any cleverly invented ideologies. For real life is much more fantastic than any fantasy; for fantasy only imitates life, while life imitates nothing. (You can learn this, and similar things, from the most maverick pick among my 100 philosophers, G. K. Chesterton.)19. It dares to be funny. It includes humor whenever relevant, because reality does. Reality is in fact amazingly funny. [Now that is wisdom. Life is funny, not sad, and not tragic.]20. It includes visual aids because we both learn and remember more effectively with our eyes than with our ears.21. The treatment of each of the 100 philosophers usually contains 12 parts, as follows: A photo, statue or portrait of the philosopher.22. A brief biography, including the seven W’s: (a) Who: his complete name; (b) Where: his place of birth and nationality; (c) When: his birth and death; (d) What: his job or career: (e) Whimsy: unusual, dramatic or humorous facts or legends about him; (f) Which was his most famous book; (g) Why he asked the questions he did. Obviously, some philosophers’ lives are much more interesting than others. Some philosophers are almost all life and hardly any theory (e.g. Diogenes the Cynic); others are almost all theory and almost no life (e.g. Hegel).23. His historical situation and problem, his dialog with previous philosophers.24. His Big Idea or central insight or most important teaching.25. His most famous quotation(s). It helps when you come to a quotation to read it aloud. Not only does it help you remember the quotation, but it also brings in to play your unconscious mind, your intuition and feelings.26. A diagram or sketch whenever possible, translating the abstract idea into a visual image.27. The practical difference the idea makes (1) to your life; (b) to thought (the idea’s logical implications); and (c) to history (to subsequent thinkers).28. The essential arguments for this idea.29. The essential arguments against the idea.30. Satellite ideas, if any.31. Short, recommended bibliography, both primary and secondary sources, but only when readable and helpful.32. Probable reading experience; hints to make the philosopher become clear and alive. To sum it up, Peter Kreeft teaches you real wisdom as he takes you on the thrilling adventure that is the history of ancient philosophy. He’s a modern-day Aquinas who writes like C S Lewis. And it only took 5 hours to read, so it’s short. This book on the Great Books is another Great Book.

How can I review this book? The publisher promised it would be released many years ago, but each time a promised release date comes, its release is pushed back another 4 to 6 months.I would love to read this book, and I have the highest regard for Professor Kreeft. However, I do not expect that it will ever be finished.

Very comprehensive treatment of subjects and matters, much of the details are made clearer. Very well illustrated, would make an excellent reference resource.manual. If you want to learn more about PLATE TECTONICS, this is the book for you. It treats the understanding of continental drift principles. I believe this is a higher level of understanding the evolving development of the earth's systems from the beginning to now, the authors did a magnificent job in presenting this advanced textbook. Many citations and references, too This is an excellent book for Earth Science majors on a university level.of study...

Really enjoyed this book (was a textbook for one quarter of classes) and was disappointed when we didn't use all of it! Concepts are explained quite well and lots of pictures and graphs to ease you into all the abstracts you may find yourself reading later if heading into the sciences. I used this as a personal resource as well to help me with concepts we weren't working on in class (research within research, lol!) but I had questions about nonetheless. Well written and easy to read :)

Excellent beginning book, very well written and easy to understand the important points.

Good introductory book for geology buffs. I got it for class and ended up reading it cover to cover, it's so good!

No issues at all. Minimal wear and tear. Just what I needed.

Nice for class never used it

This book is packed full of great information for anyone studying Earth Science, especially Earth System Science. It is a little advanced in its terminology so it is beneficial to have some prior knowledge in general science, however, anyone can benefit greatly from it!

This is a great textbook with beautiful images. The only part about this book I did not like is that it is a paperback and easily damages.

Lucinda Geoghegan's books are treasure troves for music educators. Just like her books 'Singing Games and Rhymes for Tiny Tods', 'Singing Games and Rhymes for Early Years' and 'Singing Games and Rhymes for Middle Years', this book is a wonderful collection of repertoire and meaningful activities which teach musical skills in a playful way. Great for music educators but are also suitable for non music specialists teaching music. Books come with CDs, so even if you can't read music, you can use these resources and teach music in a student centred and creative way.

I bought this book last year and I could not believe what a mess the book was. There was no structure, no information, total mess. I tried to figure out what kind of method the author(s) used for coming up with a table of contents, but failed. If you see this on eBay, don't waste your money. There are a lot of copies floating around from India as that seems to be the only place where this is printed now.

When I read the standard review provided for this book I had the expectation that it would contain more information regarding configuration. However, most of the information was just a general overview of materials management and how it related to SAP. Most of the information could easily be found in the contents of SAP online help. I do not recommend this book to functional SAP consultants who are looking for supplemental information regarding configuring the MM module.

Very disappointing. There is literally nothing in this book that is not covered in much greater detail in the online help or print files. I highly recommend NOT purchasing this book unless you do not have access to SAP help files, and you wish to know what kind of functionality SAP can offer.

Very, very bad. Nearly of no use. Please, respect also the comments from other reviewers. I bought it during my SAP Academy, when I was strugling to get some information. But, unfortunately a disaster even for a beginner, not to mention someone who works in SAP consulting business.

I think this author must have been given the title without knowing anything about SAP. It is a total disaster, nothing flows, no information, nothing. Save your money and take a SAP MM consultant out for dinner. You will get more information and you get food too.

I found SAP R/3 Help file is much better than this book. This book is based on older version and has no configuration instruction at all. It only creates confussion especially for new readers. I won't recommend this book to anybody.

I wish I had read the other reviews before I purchased the book.It provides a general discussion of MM with no definition of specific tasks. - I'm sending the book back. This book is for Virtual Implementations Only !

Bill O'Reilly is a very smart guy, but this book is absolutely horrible and is filled with historical errors from beginning to end. I am a founding member of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, and I still volunteer there, I was a founding member of the National Center for Civil War Studies at LSU, and I have been a military historian all my life since high school. I was given this book as a gift, and quite frankly, I was appalled at how grossly inaccurate almost everything in it is.The book is extremely simplistic, obviously written for grade-school students. Aside from that, countless historical facts in this book are simply not true. It's probably the poorest research work I've ever seen. There's really not much about Hitler in the book, more about Patton, as others have stated, and most of that is straight off of Wikipedia. I knew I was in trouble early when the book discusses the Ardennes offensive and mentions the dreaded "Panther II" tanks (there's no such thing as a Panther II tank), and mentions German divisions in the battle that were on the Russian front at that time and took no part in the battle whatsoever.I read the whole thing (it's a very fast read) just to see if it remained this way throughout, and yes, from beginning to end, it's largely long-repeated falsehoods that were proven to be propaganda ages ago, and in many cases, it appears whoever actually wrote this (I refuse to believe O'Reilly could've done this bad of a job) got a whole lot of facts confused by simply skimming through some basic WWII history books and then jumbling up the facts, names, places, and dates. There is a LOT of wrong information in this book, not just a little, a helluva' lot. Can't recommend this for any reason at all, it's a shame a lot of people will read this and think it's actual history. For the best on Hitler's final days, read "The Last 100 Days" and "The Bunker" and that will give you a whole lot more facts and what the last days of Hitler were actually like.

Great overview of this psychopath and his girl friend. Should be required reading in schools. Well researched from relatives involved with this madman during the War and, yes, it's a page turner. If you like pictures that help place the story you won't be disappointed. The book also briefly covers a number of other events such as the treasure trove found at the Merkers mine, the liberation of the death camps, and more. Highly recommended.

This was a gift for my Grandson at his request. He is 15 and at the age where he is interested in History and in WWII. His Mom told me that when the book arrived he was thrilled. He knows (because of good teachers and a military-honoring family) who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. I perused the book before I sent it and it is VERY well written and researched. I would recommend this book highly.

Money grab!Bill O'Reilly rehashed entire passages from his book Killing Patton for Hitler's Last Days. Not impressed at all for what I paid for the kindle edition. I would say 50% of Hitler's Last Days comes directly, word for word, from Killing Patton.

I read this immediately after reading Killing Patton which was a mistake. Most of this books content is also in the Killing Patton book and appears to be for readers that do not intend to get the Patton book. So I was a little disappointed on the lack of new content or word this better, many exact quotes from the Patton book but still worth reading.

A well written, fact filled book by O'Reilly. This man writes so well that you think you are actually there back then witnessing the actual events. Learned lot of fact about this madman Hitler and his cronies.....one of the best written on this subject....Mr. O'Reilly is just a genius in his research to write such and interesting book.....I have been buying all of his books to read, as it's great to be able to read his imput so dramatic and fact filled, that I forget where I'm at, instead back in time actually seeing this history take place for myself. I greatly admire Bill O'Reilly...I wish I had him for my history teacher, so will just have to be content with his books.

Very short, and not very well written. I'm typically a fan of O'Reilly's writing, but this book (really more like an extended magazine essay) is mired with sophomoric prose and phrasings. It's my understanding that this book is actually an excerpt from a larger whole, but truthfully I don't know that I would be very interested in reading it. By comparison, the works of Shirer are much more skillfully rendered, and actually have a way of sounding modern and approachable, unlike this book which is full of charged and awkward phraseology.

An easy read, documenting the major events and historical figures of the last 6 months of World War II. The author makes personal the experiences of the good and bad of events leading to the surrender by Germany. Leading figures of the War are offered up as real people with personalities and character. Get to know who they were, and the difference they made in our lives. Appreciate what they did, and we don’t have to do. Learn about Hitler, the man in all his hatred and arrogance. Learn from what happened so we don’t allow intolerance to rear it’s ugly head again

This is a great read! I learned a lot! (Never too late to learn.) A couple of years ago I did visit many of the places that was covered in this book. This book is a must read for all to see what a sick person Hitler was.
