"Exploring" is the word! I don't expect to ever read this book completely. It is certainly not for a beginner, unless you are determined to set off on a year-long course of exploration. I could see this book as the only subject for a full year of art school. Each chapter is a heavy mix of art, technology, and student exercises, enough to consume all your waking hours for an extended period. So, I think it's for the person who wants to open a chapter by itself and tackle it with full devotion before picking another topic. The basics are there, but each accompanied by such elaboration that a beginner may not be able, in a reasonable time, to pick up what is needed for starters.

Very interesting with a lot of information on using film. Color info was useful

As expected.

Good.

Good read so far. Only one chapter in.

outstanding book

Great book, very informative.

Every time I pick up this book, it surprises me. The depth and range of information contained within this volume is breathtaking. It is hard to imagine a more complete work on how color functions in photography; anything more and the book would weigh over 300 pounds! Whether you work digitally or chemically, you will find valuable information within its pages – and a huge source of inspiration.Robert Hirsch has made a significant contribution to the world of photography with his books, including his classic "Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography." His book "Transformational Imagemaking" rewrites the history of photography by bringing to light decades of work and artists not covered in traditional narratives. This book follows in that tradition by going beyond what other books provide."Exploring Color Photography" is for those who believe that true art and creativity comes from more than know what button to button to push (there are already plenty of books on that). Art comes from your head and your heart – and this book is designed to help you to see and think like an artist.Color is an immensely complicated subject. This book breaks down the topics into easily grasped chapters - but always with an eye to how an artist can use this information. Even the technical sections become invitations to explore creative possibilities. Throughout the book are many sidebars on "problem solving" that cover key concepts in understanding color as well as technical challenges you might encounter. Many of these can be used as self-directed photography assignments to help you learn the subject in greater detail. This book is encyclopedic in the sheer number of photographers represented in its pages – both those who are typically seen and those who's will be new discoveries for you. Each one has a paragraph or two giving you insight into the thought processes behind the artist's work, mostly in their own words. This alone guarantees that this book will be a source of inspiration for many years. This book would function brilliantly as a textbook. It contains far more information than could possibly be covered in any class. Besides jump-starting your personal creativity, it also covers art history, safety, environmental issues with the materials used, as well as archival information and getting your work out into the world. The truly amazing thing about this book is that even within the scope of the technical information presented, it never fails to keep its true focus on making art. A book that reduces photography to pushing a few buttons won't change your life – this book, on the other hand, probably will.

Norm is as good at writing as OJ is at murdering wives, but neither gets credit for it. Sometimes life is unfair.

It might be most helpful to start with what this book is not -- it is most certainly not the typical comedian memoir that is common right now. You won't be getting a chronology of Norm's life written humorously. You won't get any insight into his past or his personality, aside from tangentially. You won't even get many true stories. This book is aimed squarely at those who are fans of Norm's slightly odd brand of comedy; his mixing of fact of fiction, the shaggy-dog quality of many of his jokes and stories, his brilliant and hilarious use of language, and his deadpan refusal to acknowledge when he is joking. Some of it almost relies on outside knowledge -- for instance, his descriptions of Adam Eget probably just come across as confusing and mean if the reader is not familiar with their relationship from Norm's video podcast. Maybe some of that is a bit too "inside baseball", but for me as a huge fan of Norm, it made almost every aspect of this book uproarious.I believe I can honestly say I laughed more and harder while reading this book than any book I have ever read (including many, many other comedians' books). Without giving too much away, Chapter 5 in particular made me set the book down from laughing so hard. But at the same time, I can easily see others reading it and barely cracking a smile. It is definitely aimed at a very specific sense of humor, but for those of us who share that, it lands beautifully.

Very funny! I was on a flight, sitting between two strangers. The flight was the three of us minding our own business, and trying not to make physical contact in the tight confines of a commercial jet. The quiet scene interrupted repeatedly by what must have appeared to my seat mates as Tourette's-like bursts of cackling by me. I really enjoyed the book. And my seat mates listed even further away from me, because of my random outbursts, so my middle seat on the plane ended up being quite roomy! Well done Norm!

Filled with actual half truths wrapped in Norm's bumbling yet brilliant speaking style. While he wears the mask of a fool, Macdonald will surprise you with references to classic literary works, right before dropping the equivalent of a fart joke. There is a mix of humility and feigned (?) pride throughout. Laugh out loud funny, while giving you confirmation that Norm is exactly the guy you think you always knew...and then some. Poor Adam Eget has found fame, too, by becoming the lackey's lackey. One day I expect to read a murder/suicide headline with both their names attached to the content. Norm, keep looking over your shoulder.

Norm MacDonald has to be one of the most unappreciated comics in modern times. He is so glib, but hilarious. History will prove him to be the Lenny Bruce of our time. He has perfect comic timing...and that can't be taught! Unfortunately for Norm, he is so far ahead of his time that no one can figure out how to place him or how to best utilize his type of comedy. This has to be one of the funniest and most entertaining memoirs I have ever read...even if it is mostly true only in his mind.

It helps if you listen to the audiobook; with Norm himself reading it, it's easier to tell which parts are wholly ironic or comedic, and which parts may have a little more truth to them. But one thing I can say, is that it's a fantastically entertaining book. I've often heard it said that Norm is likely the most well read of all of the stand up comedians, especially in Russian literature, and it shows here. Norm's great deception - his comedic schtick - may be that he's sort of a dopey, backwards bumpkin, but in truth, he's anything but. Norm is a very intelligent person, and I've found this book to be surprisingly well-written and entertaining.

Well, leave it to Norm Macdonald to have written the most unusual celeb memoir I have ever read. He does however give you fair warning that not everything in the book is true. Instead it's this weird mix of truth, things that are ridiculously false, and stuff that makes you wonder, is he pulling my leg or is this legit?I never listen to audiobooks, but this time I wish I had because his humor doesn't translate as well in written form. That's not to say the book isn't funny as there were multiple times while reading this in public at the airport I had to bite my lip from laughing out loud. I just think hearing him read his book would enhance the whole experience because part of why he is so funny is his way of delivering a joke.I thought the book got off to a rather slow start. I was a good 1/4 of the way into it before it started to get pretty entertaining. I loved him including some of his old Weekend Update jokes as they are still as funny now as they were at the time.I do have mixed feelings about this book. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it was in the style of a typical celeb memoir. But Norm is anything but typical so I guess I do appreciate the fact he went in a completely opposite direction. I recommend giving this one a chance if you are a fan of his, but get the audiobook instead of reading it in written form.

I'll admit to a certain amount of bias as I've been a Norm fan since about the early 90's (I'll never forget the first time I heard his now infamous Answering Machine bit on the Caroline 's Comedy Hour...)I feel this book captures what to me is so appealing about Norm - clever, thoughtful satire which deftly maneuvers from the highbrow to the lowbrow (but mostly lowbrow thankgod - O mean let's face it that's Norm's bread and butter!)For those readers hoping for a moretraditional, garden-variety read of the author's life and career, you may find yourself feeling a bit letdown. Yet I believe that an attentive reader will come to conclude that this "memoir" does indeed contain a great deal of truth - just perhaps not the Objective truth of the author's life (Hence the title of this book).(NOTE: some advice for those not overly familiar with Norm, search the web for his WTF podcast appearance and his Conan/Letterman spots - it will greatly enhance your experience of this work).

The Eye of the Elephant: An Epic Adventure in the African Wilderness, by Delia Owens Mark Owens

From Publishers Weekly

Each year from 1973 to 1985, an estimated 1000 elephants were slaughtered in Zambia's Luangwa Valley for their ivory tusks, skin, tails and feet; in 1991, only 12 were killed in this fashion. No little credit for saving the elephants is due to the Owenses (Cry of the Kalahari), biologists who set out to research animal behavior but stayed to persuade villagers that rather than shooting elephants, they could gain more in food, jobs and money by letting the animals live and attracting tourists to see them. The Owenses not only taught the natives crafts and trades, but also organized international support to secure a temporary ban on the sale of elephant body parts. Conscious of the dangers of substituting one evil for another, the Owenses lobby for walking safaris rather than the intrusive, destructive motorized tours popular elsewhere in Africa. Their personal story is an adventure filled with the color and scent of wild Africa, with recreations of their arduous treks through wilderness, with escapes from attempts on their lives by disgruntled Africans, and with engrossing descriptions of the lives and habits of animals. The fate of those magnificent animals pulls on one's heart strings and the devotion of the Owen's to their preservation is truly impressive. While this book deals mostly with the fight to protect the elephant, they are equally busy observing and researching the lives of other species: lions, hyenas, rhinos, various antelopes etc. And who would want to actually live in the Kalahari desert for years? Somehow they did and loved it. (read their previous book "The Cry of the Kalahari")The authors are not intimidated by any local resistance and in the process manage to actually transform the lives of many villagers from being poachers to making an honest living. The ugly practice of wide-spread poaching is heart breaking and the Owens tell their story with equal passion. They also touch on their personal problems - Mark's almost fanatical pursuit of poachers at great personal risk - and Delia's stress under those circumstances.Having had the pleasure of observing these animals in the wild I was easily swept up in their battle against and their writing about it.

I found Delia Owens after reading her first novel, Where The Crawdads Sing, earlier this year. I LOVED it so I looked her up and found that she had written books prior about her adventures in Africa with her husband.I adore elephants, they're amazing creatures. Naturally, this book title jumped out at me then. The writing is excellent and really draws you in, the imagery vivid so that you can practically picture their environment.I got this from the library and then ordered it from Amazon since I needed my own copy to reread and write in/give away.

There's something about elephants, and wildlife in Africa. Starting with"Born Free" when young; meeting and hearing Artist and Wildlife Conservationist David Shepherd, and now The Eye of the Elephant delves me into the struggle and bureaucracy of saving elephants from poaching in Africa. As the song says: "If I had a million dollars".

I was intrigued by the difficulties endured by this devoted couple as they continued against so maný obstacles. Even their personal devòtion to each other was threatened but they wòuld not give up. Every time they fòund a lion pride again I felt their victory. When poachers werè stopped I feĺt their achievements. I was in the plane struggling to stay airborne or to ĺand on the inadequate airstrip. It was a very satisfying and eXciting book.

I read the book because I am eon the protection of our ecolgy: animal, plants, water, etc.It made me realized how hard scientists work toward that goal and how so very few peole seem to care.I would have ordered more, but I had orders 2 books, was charged, and never got them on Kndle Fire.I recommend this kind of reading who is also interested in our environment>

I loved this book. But I love elephants. Story not too restorative since it's about how stupidity is killing off everything everywhere. What the people endured was absolutely awful. Missionaries and conservationalist must be masochists. Africa is totally screwed in its altruism and destructive greed. Also the editor should be shot. I saw the same identical scene repeated three times. Plus many editing errors

Very emotional journey of two people observing & trying to save the animals in Africa. They fight against people who are benefiting by slaughtering the animals & their habitats & their ability to migrate. Beautiful writing, heartfelt motivation, hopeful outcome. The stories in this book show some ways in which we humans take our power too lightly and inadvertently destroy our environment & our future. This book is best enjoyed after reading the prequel book, "Cry of the Kalahari".

For readers fascinated by African elephants and other wildlife, this book is a primer in conservation challenges and practical solutions. It is also wonderfully written, painting Africa’s magic, fierce beauty with personal and emotional honesty. In the end this book will convince you to somehow help African elephants to survive and the local people vital to them prosper. Poaching can be defeated!
