From this account of her first 39 years, it would appear that pioneering social reformer Jane Addams might have as easily become a chronic invalid as a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, which she received in 1931. Diliberto, author of previous biographies of Hadley Hemingway and of debutante Brenda Frazer, situates Addams's dedication to the poor firmly within the context of late-Victorian virtuous womanhood. Drawing upon previously untapped personal papers, Diliberto reveals the enormous toll exacted on Addams by her attempt to reconcile the conflicting claims of her own ambitions and her duty, as she saw it, to her family. Only when she founded the Hull House Settlement to serve Chicago's inner-city immigrants, an enterprise that was both socially useful and under her own control, did she gain a measure of health. She was sustained as well by her deep emotional attachments to other women, especially Mary Rozet Smith, with whom Addams lived in what she called a "marriage" for more than 30 years. While acknowledging the implicit sexual content of Addams's friendships with women and documenting the passionate language of her correspondence with Smith, Diliberto is unable to determine if these feelings ever found overt sexual expression, though she is inclined to doubt it. Diliberto makes more of Addams's psychological difficulties than of the objective obstacles she overcame and does not quite account for her extraordinary success. Loved this book and love Jane Addams! Truly a remarkable person with lasting impact on the world. A well written and researched book. Found it more informative and entertaining to read than Jane's autobiography- though that was good too.

This book was an interesting read. Jane Addams was a woman ahead of her time. She lead an interesting and thought provoking life. Anyone who enjoys biographies, especially historical biography will enjoy this book.

It bothers me to hear A USEFUL WOMAN described as a "feminist biography" just because the subject bucked the gender norms of her Victorian times. This book is about a social force and conscience, Jane Addams, whose intelligence, spirituality, generosity and, yes, unmarried status drove her to found Hull-House, a "settlement" in Chicago that served as both haven and learning center for the indigent, with a particular emphasis on aiding women and children. Addams, a frail woman suffering from lifelong ailments including depression, rose above her infirmities to enact social change and awareness during a time when many of the poor were seen as morally bankrupt individuals and not the victims of a socially unjust system.The book is well-written and accessible, and suffers only rarely from too much trivial detail. Diliberto provides remarkable insight into this remarkable woman. If you are at all interested in social causes and the people behind them, read this biography. It is truly inspiring to read of how one woman changed the course of many lives.

Jane Addams was trying to find a role for herself almost from the day she was born. A Useful Woman is an absorbing biography of her attempt to balance somewhat the social inequalities she saw around her (not so easy a role for a woman in post Civil War period). It is also a fascinating account of how Addams redefined charity in America. Instead of just the wealthy doling out sums of money to the poor, she challenged the community and government to take responsibility for giving the disadvantged some chance to join the ranks of the advantaged. The Hull House she founded was a full-fledged community center with language classes for new immigrants and day care in 1891; quite a life of accomplishment before women even had the right to vote.

Although a lover of biographies, even I was surprised when I couldn't put this book down. Diliberto has written a compelling and thoughtful study of Jane Addams, but managed to interweave her character analysis seamlessly into the social issues of the age. From women's rights to labor issues, Chicago corruption to pacificism, the author glides easily from social issue to personal insight. Jane emerges as a real individual, not an "angel", but someone to be greatly admired.

This book was inspired by a conversation I had with my son in the car! After that fun conversation, we came home and I penned it down on white paper and stapled the pages together in a makeshift book. Then at bedtime, I read him our book based on conversations we had earlier. As my husband passed by listening to the bedtime story, he said, "you should publish that book for real!" The seed was planted in my brain and in my heart and that's when I started pursuing publishing this book! I searched for the perfect illustrator to bring the book to life and that's when I met Jane Yu, who illustrated this book. Our visions and hopes for the book were perfectly aligned! After that the rest was history! My wish is that this book would inspire kids to keep asking thoughtful questions and parents would keep answering them to build love and laughter, thus strengthening the bonds between a parent and a child, which is one of the most important relationships in the world! Adorable book about a simple conversation between a son and a mother. The drawings are amazingly bright and fun. My 15 month old son loves to bring me this book from his bookshelf and point at all the wonderful pictures. I honestly can’t wait for the next books from this author and this artist!!! Also very happy my son has a book he can relate to, there aren’t enough Asian children books out but I’m so glad Eunice Kang is breaking that! Bravo!

This book is a great combination of modern and classic. The art and format have a comic book feel, giving it that modern appeal. But it also has a classic children's book feel to it, with the repeating hook of "What If." It has a simple concept, which is key for toddlers and young children. I've spent my career teaching preschoolers, and also served as an early childhood literacy consultant for Head Start, so I consider myself a children's book "connoisseur."My son, who is a teenager, says he remembers what kind of children's books grabbed him when he was younger, and this book is definitely that kind of book. In his words, the author really understands children and their point of view. He also said he's already waiting for the sequel!We also loved the illustrations! Very cute and definitely appealing to children!

What an adorable story and a great example of how to respond to kids and their outrageous questions! I love that the author cultivates curiosity in a reassuring and loving way. Those tender moments in parenthood have been captured here in those lovely story. Highly recommend.

Such a great book celebrating a child's curiosity and the mother-child bond. I especially love the depiction of a regular American family with a contemporary mom (pants, Starbucks, always on the go!), the nod to Asian tradition of leaving shoes at the door, and the fearuring of Asian characters without being obvious or stereotypical. I don't know how I didn't review this sooner but this book is one of my top favorites!! There are so many poems in it that I found myself saying, "yes!" I love that Emily leads her readers through a journey that starts with self-doubt but leaves a message of hope and self-love. This is one of the few poetry books I find myself repeatedly picking up to read through again and again.

While there were streaks of brilliance inside Emily Curtis' words, I found a disturbing lack of organization. Something I've noticed that I've enjoyed about certain poets is their ability to organize thoughts, emotions and experiences into segmented themes within their writing. In Curtis' words, there's an element of immaturity and a lack of life experience, as if the editing, content and organization had been only half considered. I hope as this poet grows and improves in both skill and discernment, that some semblance of wisdom may be applied in future writing.

The book itself is not what the preview portrays, short and not to the point unfortunately. I had hoped for better.

Good writing, but almost too many references to books. I feel like this is best read after you've been cheated on or after a breakup.

I enjoyed this collection of poetry very much ! Typically, I am not an avid reader of poetry, preferring instead a classic mystery or a lovely romance. I often don't see the same images, or feel the same emotions the poet is attempting to express. Emily's poems however, struck several chords with me and I know I will open this book over and over to read my favorites again. Definitely a treasure !!!

This book is stunning. The poems took my breath away and the writing has completely won over some of my reluctant middle school students - I have had two girls tell me that they didn't know they could ever love poetry until they read this book. Seriously - it is a secondary class library essential. Thank you for writing this poetry!

I love poetry and enjoyed this book a lot. I was so excited when I ordered it. Not only could I relate to some of poems but it is a book that you will not want to put down. I have read this book multiple times since I have recieved it and love it everytime. Would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading poetry or even to people who don't read poetry often.
