I don't read much manga these days, but when I saw this pop up in my recommendations one day, I decided to buy it despite being unfamiliar with the title or author. That impulsive decision led to becoming engrossed in one of the greatest stories ever drawn in manga form.Shirai-sensei's suspenseful tale of these intelligent, happy children seemingly growing up in an orphanage surrounded with love from each other and from "Mama", their caregiver -- and then the REAL story of who and where they are -- is thrilling, exciting, hopeful, empowering, disheartening, disturbing, saddening, and everything else you could hope for in a good story. Demizu-sensei's art is perfectly matched to the unique story that is The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland), with incredible detail that you would not expect from a currently running Weekly Shounen Jump series. While the manga does run in Weekly Shounen Jump, the story is one that both males and females will find worthwhile.Seemingly every chapter ends with a cliffhanger, some new development carefully planned to coincide with the end of the title's allotted page count, and reading it online each week is only for those who can handle the anxiety of waiting a full week for the latest chapter's cliffhanger to be resolved and a new one to take its place.I really want to say so much about this manga, but I don't want to say anything that gives away even the tiniest hint about its content or secrets. So, please do yourself a great favor and buy the first volume. If you're interested enough to read this review, I will guarantee that you will enjoy the story and find yourself, like me, on the edge of your seat waiting for the next installment.

I started reading this online without any interest to it to begin with, and now let me say that this is one of my favorite manga so far. I will definitely be buying all volumes as they come out. Talk about continuous suspense that keeps you reading! As for the copy itself, it came in immaculate and I'm very happy.

This manga has only been going for a little over a year, but it’s already one of my favorite manga. I’m currently reading the weekly chapters on Viz’s official website, but I got the physical copy of the book to look at the extra stuff and to support the authors. It’s been a blast re-reading it, as I’ve noticed a lot of things I didn’t before. This also very suspenseful, gaining the nickname by fans, ‘The promised cliffhanger’. From chapter one and onward this manga always keeps me at the edge of my seat. This manga is a must read. It’s got beautiful art, great characters, unique story, kinda creepy atmosphere, and very suspenseful.

I had never heard of The Promised Neverland when I bought volume 1. I bought it on a whim, expecting to not like it or continue it, thinking the story wouldn't be my cup of tea. What I got was a terrifying adventure that I can't seem to read fast enough. It's a fantastic series, and I can't wait to see it through to the end. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but it's one of my absolute favorites now.

The Promised Neverland has a fantastic, tense and dramatic story but it's got very odd editing and spelling issues that kind of get in the way. I have a few friends in the comic industry and even they've admitted to things like missing out on typos despite reading the page 30+ times, but this is just a smidge egregious.Though, if you don't mind the errors and poor editing, the story is REALLY GOOD and the art is SUPERB though it really isn't for little kids, more like teenagers and up. It's got some death of small children.

good story so far. the pacing is a bit fast and there's not a whole lot of character development yet but its definitely worth reading if you're into something dark and twisted.

I got hooked on this manga right away. The art is a bit iffy sometimes but the writing and story more than makes up for it. Pacing-wise it moves a bit fast at first but you'll soon see there's a lot more going on than meets the eye. You will not regret picking this one up! I didn't see an age rating but I'd recommend it for ages 10-128.

A thrilling start to what's sure to be a great story! Great writing, characters, art. If you like a good mystery set in a dystopian future that features some heavy material like death and suffering this is right up your alley. I'm already hooked so I'm gonna buy the next volume and start reading it right now. I'm honestly surprised I fell in love with this manga so quickly but I'm not gonna complain. Looking forward to more!

I can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. I had actually forgotten I pre-ordered it and was surprised to find it in my library yesterday. I am so glad I bought it. Ms. Ross is an incredibly talented world builder and her characters leap off the page. Brianne and Cartier's love was complex and fully realized, her friendships were organic and beautiful. I loved the time spent with the other ardens it was so beautiful and without it the story may have fallen flat. The explanation for Brianne's memories and her final decision were so poetic. This book is about the power of womanhood and sisterhood but uses a deft hand to speak to both. I would recommend fans of high fantasy read The Queen's Rising as it toes the line between what I consider traditionally YA fantasy and an adult high fantasy novel.My Conclusion: buy it, buy it now.

This book was just, WOW. The writing is beautifully crafted, with some of the most stunning descriptive scenes I have every read. The author’s writing was just magical; the whole story was a motion picture inside my head. I was captivated by the author’s writing from start to finish. The world building, the plot, and the characters were all unique.I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and storyline. Whereas some people may note it as being slow, I saw it as a build up to the epic finale. The author made sure the readers were well-informed of every background and Brienna’s long and dangerous journey, and made sure it all came together in the end.The slow-burning romance was intense, and I savored every moment between Brienna and her love interest. And there were times where I got antsy because I was waiting for something romantic to happen and when it did, I had to read it over and over again because, ROMANCE. I’m a sucker for fantasy romance. Plus, I really liked that it was not your standard romance; it was an attraction that grew overtime for both of them.Overall, I really enjoyed The Queen’s Rising and I look forward to what is in store for Brienna in book two.

~~~~ 4.5 Stars ~~~~My streak has continued... I have been extremely lucky lately with my book selections and The Queen's Rising did not disappoint! It was beautifully written (though sometimes transparent and predictable) and it was ultimately, wholeheartedly and undeniably satisfying. Yes it did suffer a bit from Things-Conveniently-Falling-Into-Place- Rather- Easily syndrome AND the romance was a dollop mechanical, saccharine and tame BUT it was ALSO a fun, engrossing, uplifting gem gifted nicely (and rather neatly wrapped) with a big ole Happy Ending for (Almost) All glitter bow.
Now, I love strong female protagonists and a fast pace, but this book moved too fast. The book assumed deep relationships based on a few events and pages, like the bond of father-daughter between Lord MacQuinn and Brienna, and the friendship between Isolde and Brienna, to name a few. They 'deep' bond and loyalty seemed sudden. The books did a lot of telling in terms of the relationships between characters. It TOLD us that Brienna felt a strong kinship to her patron father without giving it much action. What happened? He gave her a home, but not many events brought them from point A (allies in arms) to B (loving father and daughter). The same with Brienna and Isolde. The book TOLD us that she was loyal to her queen, which I could understand, but it also TOLD us they were close friends and sisters. From what? A lesson in swordsmanship? The same goal of reclaiming the throne? What other events or moments led them to become so close? And those are just two examples. I'm bot even fully sure how to analyze Cartier and Brienna's romance. While yes, it did hint and state it, I felt like it skipped over something, going from Brienna's crush to loving him. It was a little more developed than the rest of the relationships, but it didn't have me rooting or caring for them. I felt like I missed Brienna falling for him and skipped to her in love with him.The Queen Rising was a fun read with an interesting plot, but how the relationships were written were quite lacking. Besides the relationships, the writing was otherwise great and it DID entertain me.
Hi everyone, I absolutely loved and still love The Queen's Rising!! I loved all the characters in it especially Brianna and her sisters. I could relate to them in my own life. The plot is amazing and hooks you from the beginning. I felt like I was one of the characters the whole time and experienced everything that Brianna did. Rebecca Ross does a fantastic job of keeping you wondering what's next in every page. I couldn't put down the book! THE QUEEN'S RISING is beautifully written in every way. Can't wait to see what the Author has next!!!
A fantastic and fast-moving fantasy. Seriously, a different author would have taken all the events of this book and stretched them out into two or three books, which would have been reasonable. But it all happens in this one book, so there’s always something happening, and everything that happens is just a delight.The writing is solid, the characters are distinct and awesome, the female friendships are great, and the romance is just wonderful. And the world is so incredibly well-realized.I would advise against looking at the character lists and family trees at the beginning because spoilers, but that’s a problem with the publishers being a bit dumb. Everything else is a delight.
#92,696 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
This title began my recent reading foray into Steven Saylor’s books. My first observation is that Saylor writes exquisitely. He is clearly a master of prose and storytelling. His words melt like butter over a reader’s appetite. Pages turn easily in his work, and the book is hard to put down.The genius of this particular book and the series involving Gordianus the finder is in the juxtaposition of modern concepts of murder mystery, trial and private detective work alongside perhaps the most captivating ancient culture known to man. A murder mystery in ancient Rome could easily suffer from modern bleed, but Saylor weaves in Roman culture and law seamlessly. It is at once a suspenseful drama and a history lesson that leaves one doubly fascinated. I intend to read the entire series, and I highly recommend this book to any reader who appreciates outstanding writing, mystery and a convincing historical/cultural setting that takes a murder drama out of the typical (and in my opinion trite) “who shot john” formula.
I enjoyed the SPQR series by John Maddox Roberts and also read Robert Harris’s Cicero trilogy, so I was attracted to the time period and subject matter- and who doesn’t enjoy a good mystery? His other books Roma and Empire are also worth reading. This may have been the first novel featuring Gordianus the Finder but he’s written newer books that precede this one in chronology. So, start with The Seven Wonders and Raiders of the Nile before you eventually get to this one. All of Mr Saylor’s books are historical fiction and have some basis in fact. The time period certainly comes alive. My favorite books are told in the first person and Gordianus is a good guy but no saint and sometimes he perceives things we the reader don’t and sometimes vice versa...Roman Blood is linked to the Robert Harris Cicero series by featuring one of his first famous cases. Cicero’s slave and secretary Tiro gets an education in life shadowing Gordianus in his pursuit of evidence.
My first read of Saylor. His writing reminds me of another writer who sets stories in history, Patrick O'Brian (Audrey-Maturin series). Mr Saylor does an excellent job of placing us in ancient Rome, it's streets, cultural life and the intrigue of Rome. His environment and knowledge of antiquity and the people is spot on; and I say this as a past student of Latin (along with all the Roman history that went with it)I give Mr Saylor high marks for making characters that are believable, and behave as we'd expect most mortal humans to react in key situations, yet he never loses the ability to make his characters speak in a distinctly non-modern tongue and syntax.As a stand-alone murder mystery novel, that just happens to be set in ancient Rome, ROMAN BLOOD is a good, quick and easy read. It moves along at a brisk pace from the first chapter, where right away the author captures reader attention to the crime and the interesting characters who are drawn into the mystery. I absolutely love Gordianus the Finder; who is neither presented as "all knowing", or overly heroic or macho. His demeanor, buffered by Roman custom and life, matches up with any of the great novel detectives. Gordianus is made of the same, determined stuff, ready to get dirt under the finger nails, yet with the integrity of a square player.It was a fun beach read. I will immediately order Novel #2 in the series. I'm hooked. Great job, Mr Saylor.
I picked this up at a used book sale after Goodreads had been recommending it based on my reading the Falco series. I am not sure what to expect from the series based on this book. There can't be a great deal of detail laying about dealing with actual crimes and trials from 2000 years ago. I liked Gordianus and Bethesda, but am not entirely sure that the mystery is solved in a real way. It seems to me that most of the big reveal was a matter of hand waving by the author which I am not a fan of in mysteries. I think I will try the second book, but am not an immediate devotee of the series. I like the characters so that may be enough to keep me reading.
The Hidden Wealth of Nations: The Scourge of Tax Havens
Review
“Zucman’s work on tax havens is the first serious economic research in this area. His evaluation of the share of global household wealth that is located in tax havens has become the standard in the profession. Most importantly, this is the first work offering credible estimates of the kind of economic sanctions that would make tax havens give up the financial opacity that allows them to prosper. The conclusions are powerful.” (Thomas Piketty, author of Capital in the Twenty-First Century)“Zucman seems to have little ambivalence about how to interpret the data, as his book is subtitled The Scourge of Tax Havens. He acknowledges that some view tax havens as perfectly legal and legitimate. But whatever the politics, for anyone who cares about understanding the economy, it’s clear a dramatic shift is under way.” (Wall Street Journal)“With his book, The Hidden Wealth of Nations, Zucman is positioning himself as this year’s Piketty, whose opus renewed a debate about inequality last year. . . . There has never been as much wealth sitting in tax havens as there is today, Zucman says, whether it’s Apple Inc. funneling billions in profits through a tiny Irish unit or a French cabinet minister using secret accounts to cheat on his taxes. . . . What is to be done? Zucman said there needs to be a central global register of the owners of the world’s wealth, similar to various registries for real estate holdings. Such a database doesn’t have to be public, but it must be available to regulators.” (Bloomberg Business News)“Zucman has built his career remarkably quickly, and in the process has made a place for himself among the most influential economists working today. . . . Stitching together data sets that chronicle roughly a century of offshore banking, Zucman shows how wealth in tax havens has grown to account for roughly 8% of total global household financial wealth, or roughly $7.6 trillion in 2014. . . . Armed with those figures, he makes the case that tax avoidance and evasion are at the core of the issues such as inequality and financial stability.” (Quartz)“A short and lively investigation into the global effects of tax avoidance. . . . As Zucman argues, ‘Financial secrecy—like greenhouse gas emissions—has a costly impact on the entire world, which tax havens choose to ignore.” (The Week)“A provocative new book. . . . In Piketty’s forward, he urges all those interested in inequality, global justice and the future of democracy to read the book. The wealthy among them might want to take particular note. Attacking tax havens is a crucial first step to ratcheting up taxation on the rich. The more information there is about offshore assets, the harder they will be to defend.” (Financial Times)“Tax havens are by design secretive and opaque. The entire point of their existence is to conceal the wealth hidden within them. And a new book by Zucman, The Hidden Wealth of Nations: The Scourge of Tax Havens, reveals, as never before, the extent of their role in the global economy. . . . If we are ever to combat inequality effectively, truly progressive taxation will have to be a part of the policy mix. But unless we eliminate tax havens now, we are likely to find that we lack the ability to implement it.” (Project Syndicate)“Zucman writes crisply and is forthright in his scorn for tax fraud. He also briefly addresses solutions to corporate tax manipulation, whereby multinationals shift income to tax havens. . . . Zucman’s eye-opening study will be of interest to all readers concerned about growing wealth disparity and is a fitting supplement to Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty.” (Library Journal, starred review)“Zucman is a sometime co-author with Thomas Piketty and his new book The Hidden Wealth of Nations is set to do for tax havens what his colleague’s did for wealth inequality: define and popularize the problem.” (Guardian)“One of the most thorough books on the topic.” (Le Monde)
This short but potent book is virtually the first treatment of the scourge of offshore bank accounts. Zucman’s expose maybe read in one or two sittings but contains a wealth of information on an issue discussed but little understood.There is a good reason why his book is so short. There are not a lot of solid information about this area because the subject is, well, hidden. THis is a netherworld of offshore banking, where, in addition to “wealth management,” a euphemism Zucman deciphers as “tax evasion,” the hallmark of this type of banking is secrecy. The wealthy utilize offshore accounts for the express purpose of squirreling away cash and to avoid paying taxes. To hide these assets even further, Zucman reveals that if not holding the deposits of these super-rich, which include not only individuals but corporations and other business entities, these offshore banks will manage mutual fund accounts for their clients held by other off shore entities.Zucman includes the global multinational corporations as the other main participants of this phenomenon. The multinationals use a different tax dodge, typified in a recent news story concerning Apple. Apple created controversy when it was revealed the corporation paid little corporate tax in the US (!), because its profits had been transferred to Ireland, all apparently legal moves. Zucman classifies this as another example of “hidden wealth.”We all pay the price for this skullduggery. The countries that can need the tax revenues the most for infrastructure and domestic purposes are the most prominent victims of these offshore activities. Zucman conservatively estimates that up to one tenth of the world’s wealth are held in offshore accounts, while countries such as Russia have to fifty percent of their GDP in offshore account.The most famous of these offshore accounts are in Swiss banks. Other locations exist in Hong Kong, Singapore, Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and other locales. Zucman debunks several myths concerning Swiss banks.Zucman shines a light on a particularly nefarious business practice. This is required reading.
Tax havens represent one of the ugly by-products of capitalism. They are places where the super-rich (individuals and corporations) keep their money. They are kept in secret accounts so that they cannot be accounted for as part of the taxable income of the individual or corporation. The consequence is that the super-rich pay less taxes than others, and the burden of public expenditure falls on those others. The rich call it tax planning, but Zucman attempts to persuade the reader that keeping money in tax havens is unfair to those who do not have the money to do so. Recently, the International New York Times (23 October 2015) reported that the European Commission ordered Starbucks to pau up 30 million euros in back taxes to the Dutch government. Starbucks had channelled large amounts of profits from payments for its coffee roasting recipes. The payments were not made to Starbucks but to an entity known as Alki LLP, a ‘mysterious and opaque box’ that was not required to file financial statements and which has since shut, but ‘Alki was folded into a new company, Starbucks EMEA Holdings’ which has yet to file any financial statements, according to the INYT.In this book, Zucman shows how tax havens come about, where they are (Virgin Islands, Luxembourg, Switzerland among the main ones), who goes to them, and the inequality between the super-rich and the rest that results from placing money in tax havens. Zucman says that 55% of $650 billion ‘foreign profits’ of corporations is made in six countries with low or no taxes and where little or no production or sale is done to generate that money in those countries. He named the countries as ‘Netherlands, Bermuda, Luxembourg, Ireland, Singapore, and Switzerland’. He proposes three major actions to rectify this. First, he thinks that there should be an open register of financial wealth of every wealth-owning entity. Secondly, he calls for adequate sanctions against tax havens, and thirdly, he thinks that tax structures should be revamped. For example, not allowing profits to be accounted separately in different countries. Only when the world can see the true global profit and loss accounts of any given company, can the taxation be fair and equitable.A great deal has been packed into this slim 113-page book that is extremely thought provoking. It also calls into debate the age old issue of not penalising entrepreneurs so that their motivation to create greater wealth will be maintained. Is capitalism taking another knock?
One Star: this book won't teach you how to hide your money!Yes, I'm joking.Hidden Wealth is an informed view into the current state of the movement of money out of taxable states into low to no tax hiding places.spoiler: those polite Swiss are still screwing the rich worldThe author proposes how to resolve this issue but without realistic considerations, eg: even more regulationFor a book that could be a very dry and academic the English language edition is written in beautiful prose. Kudos to the author and translator Teresa Lavender Fagan.
Zucman does a great job explaining how money flows off shore, stays there and avoids the taxation that happens to the "little people." If you are interested in economics, politics or good citizenship, this is a must read.
This easy to read, short and concise book takes a simple approach addressing the analysis of thax havens. If you have absolutely no idea of what or how a tax haven works, this book provides a simple yet precise explanation. The author suggests a few methods to measure the hidden wealth and solve the taxing issues, sacrificing depth probably to target at a broader audience, beyond economists and policy-makers. It's a good work to start a discussion on this topics.
An excellent discussion of how the U.S. Is being deprived of taxes which must be made up by its citizens. To extract the full measure of its significance it must be read carefully. Important aids to understanding are the figures that summarize models in the narrative. Moreover, it provides a very practical method towards achieving the goal of taxing wealth that has been proposed in Piketty's "Wealth in the 21st Century".
This book is an insightful plan to action to stop companies and the rich from refusing to pay their fair share of taxes.
