Not exactly 100% what I expected, (I was thinking more of 'modernism') ... but am not disappointed. Thomas O'Brien's work is virtually indistinguishable from Vicente Wolf's. If you like very clean interiors that still have character, and if you like lots of white rooms with dark accents, reserved use of color, selective use of antiques, etc..... then this is for you.O'Brien's 'modern' is really a super-cleaned up, pared down interpretation of a traditional sensibility. Cover photo is typical.I would buy this if it were twice the price... (but it also happens so suit my taste.)If you love lots of color and pattern, then give it a miss. Have not read much of text, so can't comment on that.

I just acquired this book and I am so impressed. Not only did I enjoy the beautiful images but the text as well. Thomas O’Brien describes in detail the inspiration for each home. The homes are edited and refined, blending both traditional and modern elements. A couple of the homes were more modern than i would normally care for, but his writing and photos are so good that I thoroughly enjoyed them as well. The remaining homes lean more traditional. It was also interesting to see his apartment transformed from urban modern as the second home featured in the book, to a much more maximalist studio decor in the last chapter.

i have watched thomas o'brien in decorator magazines for many, many years. i love his sense of design and style. i especially love his use of old things, from fine antiques to junk, mixed in with more modern elements. we own mostly old things, and am trying to figure out how to mix in some contemporary stuff so my house doesn't look like grandma's place. this book has a full continuum of traditional to modern rooms that are inspiring me to make my house more interesting. wonderful book--thank you to everyone involved!

I love his style! I buy a lot of decorating books, but this is definitely one of favorite books.

This book is not only lovely to look at, but full of valuable and interesting design information. It is loaded with great photos of traditional, modern and vintage modern rooms and explanations of each. A fun book for either browsing or for serious study.

Thomas O'Brien's work is eclectic and fresh. This book shows complete and detailed examples of his interior for himself and a few clients. Lots to details to study and steal for your own interior.

I have been a fan of his work for a number of years and am pleased to add this to my library. Nicely done

This design guru is a genius .He is always fresh AND classic. Although he achieves the appearance of effortless style, his spaces are detailed, clean and intentional. Learning more about him through this book has been delightful as well inspiring.

I love all of Maria's books and I am a huge fan. I use all of Maria's cookbooks and would highly recommend all of them. This book is probably my kids favorite though. I use it almost daily in my house! Because these treats are so healthy I make one almost every night for dessert. My 4 kids love taking turns picking out the treat and they love helping me make it as well. We have almost completely eliminated sugar from our diet and we have never felt better. I don't even remember that last time one of us got sick. This book has really helped my kids to embrace the healthy way of eating. Last night we went to a family party and I allowed my children to have the sugar and starch filled birthday cake. After the party all of my kids felt horrible from all of the sugar! One of my kids said, "Mom, your cake is so much better than Grandma's." My cake (Maria's cake) has no sugar and no starch and my kids now prefer it. They also love all of her candy bars (snickers, twix, whatchamacallit), the cookies, cinnamon rolls, etc. In fact, we have tried almost every recipe and we have loved them all. Thank you Maria!

I got this for my son when he was almost 6 and of course he didn't pay much attention, the illustrations being in black and white and the text being so instructive, however, this book got ME totally absorbed! Illustrations and explanations are very interesting, it's a fantastic book. Now that my son is 8 it's time to put it back to his library, he'll appreciate it now.

GET THIS BOOK! Why? Because Maria Emmerich knows how to combine ingredients to make & makeover traditional desserts into healthy ones that give no clue that they're good for you; she has the enviable and unique talent of being able to take a traditional recipe and transform it completely! The recipes in this particular book are grain free and low carb, so you won't find white flour or sugar included but I can emphatically say I never missed them. I've been too busy enjoying Boston Cream Minis, Cookie Dough Dip, Cannolis, Cookie Candy Bars, Chocolate Lava Cake, Turtle Cheesecake with Caramel Sauce, and the list goes on and on.Sometimes when people are seeking and transitioning into a healthier diet they feel that it requires herculean strength and will power to resist all the evil frankenfood that is out there or that they have to spend exorbitant amounts of money to eat well because their tastebuds have been sentenced for life in the land of bland. However, suppose you could eat food that was good for you and tasted so delicious you would be willing to pay a personal chef to create dishes to specifically please your palate and simultaneously guide you in making better nutritional choices? That's essentially what you get when you obtain any of Maria's books As a nutritionist Maria knows about the science of food and how it works in and affects our bodies; either negatively or positively. However, as a chef she knows that most of us don't only eat food for its nutritional value but primarily because we like the taste and mouth feel; therefore, the recipes she develops are both nutritious and delicious (which, by the way is the title of another one of her books Nutritious and Delicious). In addition, the recipes are relatively easy to make (even for people who may not necessarily enjoy cooking) and use ingredients that are easy to find in most stores or order from websites like Amazon or Netrition.I'll tell you a brief story how I found this to be true. Last year I had Christmas dinner with my sister and some friends. Since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I try to stay on track with my food intake especially with regard to carbohydrates (whether potatoes or candy bars). However, among the dessert delectables was a Hershey chocolate cake. This was the cake of my youth. The homemade deep dark chocolate kind of cake that requires two cups of sugar and an additional three cups for the even darker, richer frosting. Like Eve should have done, I never should have given it a sidewise glance to acknowledge it; never mind eating it but chocolate and I are old friends that go way, way back. I tried to hold out but it was Christmas and this was chocolate cake; for me, an (im)perfect storm. Ultimately, the cake was there and I did eat of it; again and again and again. Knowing I was sliding down a slippery slope, I frantically tried to stave off and ignore the cravings that had been abruptly reawakened. Not so easy. I wanted chocolate cake and not just any chocolate cake I wanted it to taste like the forbidden Hershey chocolate cake.Long story short, I went searching for a realistic low carb version of the cake although I despaired of finding one. Just when I was about to give up I happened to stumble upon a recipe for a Mocha Fudge Cake on Maria's blog. In fact, that recipe was blogged exactly one year ago today on October 7, 2011 and graces the cover of her book "The Art of Eating Healthy". What a Godsend! Delight yourself in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). The cake was exactly what I was desiring and looking for! Decadent rich dense chocolate that was not only comparable to but better than the Hershey's cake AND it had the bonus of being healthier. I know this because Maria generously included the nutritional information for the traditional cake per serving (42 carbs) and her "healthified" version per serving (3.1net carbs). Needless to say, I was indeed absolutely delighted; so much so that I immediately ordered another book for my sister whose grandson was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes. When I make Maria's recipes even high-carbers exclaim how good they are and don't realize I'm serving low carb food. We now know that eating low carb is generally better for you even if you're not diabetic or trying to lose weight. However, I am both so Maria's recipes have been like finding a gustatory treasure trove for me. I'm so glad I "discovered" her. She definitely has a talent as evidenced by the fact that I have three of her books and a smile on my face from reading and eating sumptuously :>) Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

I just got my cookbooks and they are beautiful! Very nice layout and tons of info on ingredients. I'm almost emotional! I've tried several of Maria's recipes from her blog and my family has enjoyed everything. I'm on a mission to get us wheat and sugar free and with Maria's help and materials I feel empowered. I read her book Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism and ordered two of her cookbooks. I hope to have the whole library someday!! Soooooo happy! Thank you, Maria!!

Ready to say goodbye to sugar and still eat sweets like a king or queen? I found that once I gave up carbs my body did begin to release and lose fat and when I eat full fat I do not regain. This type of eating really works well for my body and I don't miss a thing. In fact, now I eat more than ever. I have bought three of Maria's books and enjoy them all. I find most everything really easy to make and not only delicious but also fun to make and eat. I did have to invest some money in a lot of new ingredients and sugar free sweeteners and such, but clearly it is worth it. I am happy!

For someone newly diagnosed with diabetes and a life long sweet tooth, going on a low carb diet to avoid having to take insulin was a nightmare. With little to no guidance from my physician, I started searching online for low carb recipes that I could actually eat. I stumbled onto Maria's website, and have been an avid fan every since. She makes a healthier version of almost every food you can imagine, and is always posting more. There are some tips and tricks to low carb cooking, but as you read through Maria's cookbooks she tells you how to make it work.If you have a rapid sweet tooth like me, this is the cookbook for you!

"Kirkus Reviews" This is what Lester Bangs would have written had he been a farmboy raised on a diet of Skid Row and KISS. Unfailingly smart and demonically opinionated...Ronin Ro author of "Have Gun Will Travel: The Spectacular Rise and Violent Fall of Death Row Records" With a style as hilarious as it is thought-provoking, Chuck Klosterman delivers an authoritative, impressive debut.Marc Weingarten author of "Station to Station: The History of Rock and Roll on Television" Klosterman's hilarious heavy metal odyssey will flick the Bic of every headbanger who's ever found salvation in a great Motley Crue riff. I share five basic traits with Chuck Klosterman. We were both born in the same year, we both grew up in somewhat culturally isolated communities, we both love 80s hair metal, Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil was the record that had the biggest impact on our early teenage lives and finally, we can both karaoke Guns 'n Roses' Apetite for Destruction from start to finish. There are still some differences in our journeys from childhood to maturity, but those are mere details. I spent my teen years baking on a tropical Latin American shithole instead of freezing on a Midwestern wasteland and I had access to MTV as early as in 1982. Instead of becoming an indie rock loving hipster during College like the author I kept my metal faith in the early 90s, Nevermind notwithstanding, and moved on to extreme metal as the decade progressed, but in the end, it doesn't matter, since we both still rock to the same aquanet friendly songs when drunk. You might say that because my teenage music related experiences are pretty similar to Chuck's I'm bound, even obligated to love this book and that is a very valid point, but that doesn't mean anyone can enjoy it, since it's very entertaining and written with an unassuming, funny and down to earth style. Since the story of a nerdy teenager using rock music as a means to escape his boring, drab day to day life and overcome his own lameness can be the story of countless people everywhere, this book transcends its limited musical scope and ultimately becomes a paean to music lovers of every genre and origin, while still managing to make poignant observations about the radical changes media and music consumption went through the 80s. Highly recommended for pop culture enthusiasts, music lovers and anyone who was a teenager during the 80s.

As someone who came of age in the 1980s, when what Chuck Klosterman calls "glam metal" and I always called "hair metal" ruled the airwaves and charts, I knew of most of the bands he discusses and heard some of their biggest hits in passing, but metal wasn't my thing (I pretty much went from New Wave to punk to "college music" like REM and the SMiths). Since I spent the late 1980s hearing song after song on the college stations and thinking, "why isn't this getting mainstream airplay? It would be a hit!" I resented the stranglehold the crappy metal gods held on the charts and was happy to see them go and more of the music I liked begin to take over in the early 1990s.But Chuck Klosterman was a different breed. From the moment he first heard Motley Crue on cassette in 1982, he had found HIS music. He spent the 1980s as a devout metal-head, and largely remains one today. As an articulate writer and critic, and a fan of music largely ignored or decried, he turned his word processor to an analysis of why his favorite music was good after all, and more importantly, why it worked for him and his friends in their backwater town in North Dakota.I loved this book. Metal was never my music but I felt a kinship with Klosterman for the absolute passion and devotion he showed for what he loved. I had my own obsessions and could completely identify with his. I enjoyed his thumbnail history of heavy metal, his analysis of the different bands, and the memoir aspects of how events in the history of the music intersected with his own life and consciousness--for example, a story in the newspaper about Vince Neil's DUI killing a member of another band (and badly wounding several other people) didn't mean that Vince Neil was a criminal or possibly going to prison to middle school Chuck--rather, the appearance of the story in the local newspaper was an odd confirmation that the music and people he loved existed in a larger world that otherwise seemed to take no notice.I read the book straight through in one sitting--it's a fast, easy, often laugh-out-loud-funny read--and it was the kind of book where I kept reading bits and pieces to my partner. Definitely recommended to anyone who is feeling nostalgic about the metal bands of their youth, or even for those who aren't particularly fans of the music but can identify with spending one's pre-teen and teenage years obsessed with something others find stupid or dorky.

... A mixed bag of personal stories, album reviews, insights and random thoughts make this book an exciting read...This book will really hit home for your average Heavy Metal fan living in a ho-hum town; I know it did for me. And yes you can be a fan of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Slayer and still like Cinderella or (and this is funny) The Smiths. Who would have thunk it, sorry Chuck, I do. So do yourself a favor and read this entertaining book you'll reminisce about the good ol' days and maybe even stay in on a Friday night, turn on some Metal, and enjoy a "Chuck Klosterman" drink.

I absolutely love this book. As a child of the 80's and particularly 80's metal this book was a real trip down memory lane. His personal stories are wonderfully written and his analysis of the genre is pretty much right on. The only problem I have with the book is that he tries too hard to defend 80's metal. I feel no need to do so because I simply don't care if other people liked it or not. I did and so did a lot of my friends. In fact I still love to crank the "80's metal" playlist on my iPod.To me the 80's is the by far the greatest musical decade precisely because most of the music had no deep meaning. It was about having fun and enjoying life(although not by the same moral code I followed). The 90's came along and all of a sudden everyone is depressed and they're trying to tell me why I should be also. Sorry, there are too many reasons NOT to be depressed, especially in this country. This book is funny, witty and a fantastic read, even if you're not a fan of 80's metal. I look forward to checking out some of his other titles.

I liked Cocoa Puffs more than Fargo but both are very good. I disagreed with his takes on Rush being Christian rockers and Queensryche being just like Dream Theater, but it's hard for me to quibble with a guy who's so self-deprecating and makes me laugh out loud. His description of Poison on Page 63 is a highlight, as is three year hiatus on reviews for calling a particular cheesy album 'stellar.' I just ordered IV. The man can write.
