The story is detailed and interesting without being boring.
Wow....just....wow. I knew going in that the author of this series unashamedly admits to being inspired by Firefly to write this series and even create these characters. So there was a part of me which really, really wanted to see this work. I could totally see Nathan Fillion playing Carl. But even so, it was a complete joy to work through all the stories. Yes, some of them work a little better than others (that has to be a given with this many stories). There were times I was literally laughing out loud, other times I caught myself giggling quietly as Carl or one of the other characters did something.Incredible characters you find yourself caring about. Great, intriguing and zany stories. Fascinating character arcs and developments and changes which you don't really expect, but after they happen you realize it had been coming for some time and it just...seems right. Just a bunch of well-done stories. I don't really want to say much more or it might give it away. But if you're a fan of fun, quirky sci-fi, this is your jam. Definitely if you loved shows like Firefly or characters like Han Solo. Or what if Gandalf was a crotchety old wizard who was on a ship piloted by Han Solo? Yeh, you might enjoy this.As a side note, definitely intended for adult/mature readers, mainly due to language (most of the main characters enjoy the use of the F-word) and violence. Not really any explicit sexual content, but the book doesn't really shy away from the fact that it's happening. If it were a movie it would most likely be rated R for language, violence, and (implied) sexual content.
I was afraid that Galaxy Outlaws was going to be a lame 85 hour Firefly knockoff that would result in numerous concussions due to excessive face-palming. After listening to all 85 hours I'm happy to report that Morin does a wonderful job of keeping the spirit of the Firefly's crew alive while creating an original universe that I want more of. The longform storytelling gives us time to see the galaxy from the crew's eyes, and gave me everything from heartbreak to literal laugh-out-loud moments.Take us to astral, Morin.
First off, 87 hours for one credit on Audible? If you are considering whether to do it... yes. Certainly. Best credit I ever spent. Not the best book, but the price/performance is outstanding.I am not finished this series, and will come back to update this review. I am listening to the Audible version, so to be honest I may miss a few details that go by when I am really concentrating on something else. So far I am really enjoying them, they make my three hour a day Bay Area commute more bearable. With a series of stories in an ongoing world the author has to be good to keep the inconsistencies from stacking up, and so far so good. The cast of primary characters is interesting, in my mind they are The Adult (captains former wife, former Marine, the responsible one), The Drunk (Captain, former military space pilot), The Mechanic (drunken high end primate, as good as human), The Wizard (no, really), The Cleric, and The Kzin (well what else is a 7 foot cat person), and The Bear (a sentient dog that I don't think we have plumbed the depths of). It's a series of heists and smuggling. They are unlikely to ever play anything straight. What they do is pretty much justified. Why 4 stars? I don't find drunks sympathetic characters. The Captain is the excess ballast in a leaky ship. He's the thing that while a savant in may ways is also the idiot in many others. If he wasn't getting blind amnesiac drunk then they would be in better shape, and then maybe there wouldn't be a story. Perhaps it's a morality tale?If they deal with the drunks then I will advance this to five stars. As it is, there may come a time in the 87 hours where I just can't continue with this series. I despise gamblers and drunks. But the positive characters rescue the story. I will probably come back for them, even if I wish The Captain would have a fatal accident.
Engaging, space romp. 1 credit for all the episodes is a steal. Audio book needs some work, some chapters out of order, narrator dies a great job.
It was great! Way worth the money. I got the audio book 80 plus hours. There were some slow parts but for the majority it was just good fun. I normally don't give a 5 stars but to keep anyone entertained for 80 plus hours well that's just hard to beat. I will miss these characters. As for the author there was one part missing. The rescue of Coobo by Esper I felt that was left out at the end. Maybe another mission coming?? I would really love to read that at any rate. Probably spelled their names wrong but you know who they are.
You will find similarities to a number of different SF movies and TV series. This is like listening to a TV series you wish they would make! It reads fast and funny with a little adventure and larceny along the way. The characters are presented well and many are very well done. Kubu is awesome! Since i'm listening to this, I'm not sure I have the spelling right! haha! Go have an adventure or two and meet some new friends along the way.
Glad I bought this. From the reviews over at Audible.com, this is reminiscent of Firefly so I got this to tide over the Firefly blues. Great writing and some characters who really grow on you. The narrator Mikael Naramore did a fantastic job of bringing the stories to life. The icing on the cake is the great value at 1 Audible credit for 85 hours. No brainer purchase for Browncoats.
