Beyond Five Points by Reisinger and Allen is a book that sets out to not only define and defend the five points of Calvinism, but to also answer objections and questions concerning Calvinism and it also challenges Calvinist on different levels. From the beginning of the book the authors goal is to show how Calvinism comes out of Scripture, and it is not a system that is imposed on Scripture. The book is divided into three sections: truth, goodness, and beauty. The first section deals with the Five Points of Calvinism, their historical and biblical (from Paul) foundation, and a chapter specifically focusing on the atonement. This section starts with the historical context. The authors list the five articles of the remonstrance, and then list the counter articles that were adopted at the Synod of Dort. We then traveled back in time to the Pelagian controversy and the authors provide a nice chart comparing the Pelagian and Augustinian views regarding the effect of the fall, sin, man's will, and salvation. The authors also trace Calvinism through Southern Baptist history. This is helpful in the current debates in the Southern Baptist convention, because many arguments tend to completely ignore the Calvinistic roots that are clearly present in Southern Baptist history. The next chapter defines and defends the five points of Calvinism using Paul's writings in the book of Romans. This chapter is 50 pages long, and much that is said in here has been said in other volumes on the five points of Calvinism. As the authors state in the introduction, this book is not meant to replace other volumes on Calvinism, but to add to them. The material is laid out very nicely. First the authors give a summary of the Calvinistic view, then of the Evangelical Arminian view, then a summary of the openness of God view and then an examination of the biblical text. The authors write very clearly, in an easy to understand way, and are very fair in their description and critique of other views. The chapter on the atonement is a very beneficial one. These 25 pages provide an excellent defense of particular atonement. The authors use the nature of the atonement as given in Scripture to determine the scope of the atonement. Reisinger and Allen give a brief definition of five words used to describe Christ's death: sacrifice, propitiation, redemption, reconciliation and substitute. I found this brief section absolutely outstanding. In just a few short pages the authors define these words biblically and show that to hold to a general redemption view, one must redefine what these words mean. They state, "general redemption proponents often respond that Christ actually redeemed those who will never be saved but that they are responsible for appropriating that redemption that has already been accomplished for them. In other words, unbelievers who have not appropriated their redemption and who never will nonetheless remain redeemable. The problem with this is that it is a subtle but impermissible change in the meaning of redemption. Scripture speaks of redemption as an actuality, not a potentiality." The authors continue in this section with well written arguments that flow nicely together. The difficult question for those who hold to an unlimited atonement is this, "if Christ died 'in the place of' non-elect unbelievers, how can God demand double payment from them? Did Christ 'drink damnation dry' for those who receive damnation?"...."If Christ died for your sin and paid your sin debt, you are free indeed, your debt discharged by the precious blood of the Savior! This wonderful truth cannot be jettisoned to save the idea of an indefinite atonement." The authors also clearly explain the meaning of John 3:16. This verse is the most common verse in the Bible and often used as an argument for general redemption based off of "whosoever will." The authors rightly say that "the word 'whosoever' is not an indefinite phrase that can be wrenched out of context to support general redemption. The Greek work is 'all' or 'every' (pas). When used with a participle, it means simply every one who is referenced in a specified set - in this context, every one who believes. The point is that everyone who believes has eternal life. The giving of the Son guarantees that. Yet this verse does not indicate whom the 'whosoevers' are." John 6:37; 44 provide us with that answer, John 3:16 simply tells us that all of those who believe WILL gain eternal life. The Calvinist would certainly say AMEN! to that, but the text simply does not talk about the extent of the atonement. This section also walks through those difficult passages that seem to suggest Christ atoned for all sins. The passages that are examined are : John 3:16, 1 John 2:2, Hebrews 2:9, 1 Timothy 2:1-6, 1 Timothy 4:10, 2 Peter 2:1, and 2 Peter 3:9. The authors are very helpful in showing that these verses do not say what general atonement proponents insist that they say when read in context. The authors also answer difficult questions concerning Calvinism. They answer 6 objections and 3 heartfelt questions. This section is very beneficial as it shows that while some of the answers may be difficult, Calvinism does not force those who hold to it to 'dodge' the difficult questions. Because it is a system that comes out of the Bible, not one imposed on the Bible, we can simply go to the Bible for the answers to these difficult questions. The chapter on the closet Calvinist urges those who hold to the doctrines of Grace to proclaim them, rather that shy away from talking about them. The authors say, "the biblical truthfulness of the doctrines of grace is the most important reason why the doctrines of grace should be a beacon shining on a hill rather than hidden under a bowl." Lest someone take this command to start charging at people with these truths, the authors take the next chapter to help the reader show how to love his brother/sister in Christ and gently teach these truths properly. The author's use of 'Inconsiderate' from Pilgrim's Progress fits nicely here as they say that, "he never thinks before he speaks, and he certainly does not pray before opening his mouth. He never puts himself in another person's place. He has neither the head nor the heart to do so." This is vitally important to remember. Every truth that we know has been taught to us by God and we should humbly seek to help other understand grace, not plow through them and mock their theology. These last two chapters were extremely helpful for me to better understand how the doctrines of Grace get fleshed out in our every day actions.I was extremely blessed by this book. This may be the most accessible and helpful book on the Doctrines of Grace that I have read. This is both a great reminder of the truths we hold dear, and a challenge to proclaim them with love. This book would be highly beneficial to someone who has never understood Calvinism properly, as it is well written, easy to read, and theologically rich. A wonderful combination.I received a free copy of this book from Founders Press in exchange for an honest review.Copies of this book can be purchased here: Beyond Five Points.
